About IEEE Hampton Roads

IEEE is the world’s largest professional association advancing innovation and technological excellence for the benefit of humanity. IEEE and its members inspire a global community to innovate for a better tomorrow through its highly cited publications, conferences, technology standards, and professional and educational activities. IEEE is the trusted “voice” for engineering, computing, and technology information around the globe.

The term Hampton Roads predates the founding our our country. It is a nautical term that refers to the water where all three branches of the Elizabeth River join the James River at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay.  The cities of Newport News, Hampton, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, and Suffolk border the Roads directly.   Our members hail from Williamsburg , James City County and York County to the west down to Virginia Beach in the southeast and over to Virginia's Eastern Shore in the northeast. The Eastern Shore consists of Accomack and Northampton Counties. The southwest corner includes Isle of Wight , Southampton , and Surry Counties. The northern counties are Essex , King and Queen , Lancaster , Mathews , Middlesex , Northumberland , Richmond Counties. In between, we have members in Franklin, Gloucester, Poquoson , and and Smithfield . You can learn more about our region at COX.net for Hampton Roads, HamptonRoads.com, and AOL Local - Hampton Roads,

We have student branches at the major universities and colleges with engineering programs in the area: Old Dominion University, Hampton University, Norfolk State University, Christopher Newport University, and ECPI College of Technology .

Our members work in a number of nationally recognized industries including Northrop Grumman Newport News, NASA Langley, Jefferson National Laboratories and a host of government agencies supporting Langley Air Force Base, Fort Monroe, and the Norfolk area naval stations and bases. The Hampton Roads Economic Development Alliance has an excellent summary of our industrial and economic base. The Hampton Roads Technology Council maintains a site that includes job listings. The Eastern Shore is home to the NASA Wallops Flight Facility, Virginia Space Flight Center and the US Navy Surface Combat Systems Center.

We hold monthly meetings twelve times a year. Generally they are on the third Thursday and alternate between the Southside and the Peninsula. The subjects are always interesting and the fellowship is even better. Please join us at our next meeting.
