Extensible Modeling and Simulation Framework (XMSF)

The Extensible Modeling and Simulation Framework (XMSF) is defined as a set of open-standard, webbased technologies and services, applied within an extensible framework, that enables a new generation of distributed modeling & simulation (M&S) applications to emerge, develop and interoperate. Current research showed that web services are an appropriate basis for organizing and composing the many necessary capabilities of Web/XML and Internet/networking needed for M&S applications. The initial work was conducted by a core group of scientists and researchers of George Mason University (Fairfax, VA), Naval Postgraduate School (Monterey, CA), Old Dominion University (Norfolk, VA), and SAIC (Sand Diego, CA), supported by several partners from industry. The history, developments, and current research projects will be presented to the local IEEE group on April 21, 2005.

Biographical Sketch: Dr. Andreas Tolk is a Senior Research Scientist in the Virginia Modeling Analysis and Simulation Center at Old Dominion University, where he lectures in the Modeling and Simulation program and in Computer Science. He holds a PhD in Computer Science and Operations Research and a Master in Computer Science, both from the German University of the Federal Armed Forces. He has over 14 years of international experience in the field of modeling and simulation of and for military command and control systems, and serves on the Executive Committee of the Simulation Interoperability Standards Organization. His work focuses on integration of M&S functionality into real world applications, based on open standards.
