Biographical Sketch: Dr. Michael Kelley, professor of applied science at the College and a project leader at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab) in Newport News, oversees a $192,000 grant from the Department of Homeland Security to test the performance of "killer nylon," laser-treated fabric that had demonstrated the ability to kill microbes in lab tests. If fabric proves effective in real-world tests, which will be conducted in cooperation with the Newport News Office of Emergency Management, it could be used to provide germ-killing garments for police and fire-fighters, among other applications.

Dr. Kelley's past and present work experience includes 26 years with DuPont Central Research, 14 years of off-campus faculty in Chemical Engineering at the University of Delaware. He is the founding chair of the Jefferson Lab Laser Processing Consortium. Dr. Kelley's research includes polymer surface modification by UV or IR light, laser micromachining driven by FEL and other lasers, the application of surface science to understand and manage contaminated soils, and novel use of UV light sources with Dr. Dennis Manos.

As a professor he teaches courses in material characteristics, solid surfaces and interfaces, advanced surface science, and a freshman seminar on recycling technology.
