JAMAICA SECTION ACTIVITIES - 2002


HIGHLIGHTS

Distinguished Lecture Tour

Fourth Generation Cellular Systems and Smart Antennas was the topic for presentation and discussion at The IEEE Communications Society's, Distinguished Lecture Tour, on April 10, 2002, at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel. The presentation was delivered by the IEEE COMSOC's Distinguished Lecturer, Dr Jack H. Winters, formerly Division Manager of the Wireless Systems Research Department of AT&T Labs - Research.

The evolution to high-speed data mobile wireless systems, with data rates in excess of 10 Mbps was discussed. The extension of wireless local area networks using 802.11b and 802.11a, and cellular systems (WCDMA), to provide high-speed ubiquitious access was described. Smart antennas were also described and shown as a key technology to provide the needed enhancements of range extension, interference suppression, and capacity increase.


SoutheastCon 2002

SoutheastCon 2002 was held at the Embassy Suites Hotel, Columbia, South Carolina, U.S.A. April 5 -7, 2002. The conference was attended by executives of the Jamaica Section, and by more than 25 IEEE student members of the University of Technology, Jamaica, and The University of the West Indies (Mona). The students participated in various student competitions at the conference.


SoutheastCon 2003 Preparations

The Jamaica Section in collaboration with Region 3, and the University of Technology, Jamaica, was selected to host SoutheastCon 2003 at the Renaissance Jamaica Grande Resort, Ocho Rios, Jamaica. The Jamaica Section commenced preparation to host a successful conference.


The Jamaica Section received confirmation from the IEEE Computer Society that the petition to launch the Jamaica Chapter of the Society was accepted.


IEEE Student Membership

An IEEE student branch was launched recently at the Mona campus of the University of the West Indies. There were twenty-five student members. The Student chapter of the University of Technology, Jamaica was vibrant and had a membership of more than fifty students. Students from both institutions were highly motivated and committed to the objectives of the IEEE.


IEEE Jamaica Section's 25th Anniversary Celebration

The special event for the year was - the 25th anniversary celebration of the IEEE Jamaica Section. The 25th Anniversary Dinner was held on Friday, December 6, 2002 at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in Kingston. The guest speaker for the event was Mr Everton Davis, Manager of Comtech Ltd.

JANUARY

  • The Jamaica Section commenced activities for the new year with a meeting of the Executive Committee, on the 23rd January 2002, at the School of Engineering, at the University of Technology, Jamaica. Also in attendance were members of the Executive of the UTech student chapter. Matters discussed at the meeting were, inter alia, selection of Chairs of the Standing Committees, the formation of the Computer and Power Society Jamaica Chapters, student chapter activities, monthly meeting presentations, preparation for SoutheastCon 2003, and the special event for the year - 25th anniversary celebration of the IEEE Jamaica Section.

FEBRUARY

  • The Management of the Radio Spectrum in Jamaica was the topic for presentation and discussion at the Wednesday, February 22, 2002, monthly meeting of the Jamaica Section. The presenter was Mr Roy R. Humes, Chief Technical Director of the Spectrum Management Authority. The venue was Le' Meridien Jamaica Pegasus Hotel. The meeting commenced at 7:30 pm.


  • The IEEE Computer Society launched the Distance Learning Campus in February 2002. This new service offered courses free to members as an additional benefit of membership. One hundred Web-based training courses including Java, Cisco, CompTIA, HTML, Windows Network Security, Unix, Visual C++ to name a few were offered! Access to the Distance Learning Campus was available 24 hours a day. A minimum 56K Internet connection was required.

MARCH

  • Three undergraduate students (Ms Denise Edwards, Ms Stacy Codner, and Mr Devon Morgan) of the faculty of Computing & Engineering of the University of Technology, Jamaica, were the presenters at the Jamaica Section's monthly meeting. The topic was - Frequency Detection of Trains and Emergency Vehicles. The SoutheastCon 2003 planning Committee also met during the month of March.


  • The Jamaica Section received confirmation from the IEEE Computer Society that the petition to launch the Jamaica Chapter of the Society was accepted.

APRIL


MAY

  • Planning meetings for SoutheastCon 2003 were held in May.


JUNE

  • Coordinated Facility Protection was the topic for presentation at the monthly Section meeting held 19th June 2002, at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel. The presenter was Mr Colin Mundy, Managing Director, Sheltronics Ltd. The main areas discussed were: Lightning protection, grounding and bonding, surge protection and Erico's Six point protection plan.

    The meeting was also updated on plans for SoutheastCon 2003.

JULY

  • A tour of the Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority's RADAR Control Centre was conducted by Mr Patrick Stern, Director, Air Navigation Services on Wednesday, July 17, 2002 at 3:00pm. IEEE members were invited to tour the facility.

AUGUST

  • Power Factor: Impact on Electricity Costs - was the topic for presentation and discussion at the monthly Section meeting held at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel on Wednesday, August 21, 2002. The presenter was Mr Trenton Heckburn, Marketing Specialist, Power Quality Division, Schneider Electric/SquareD. The topic included:(1) Understanding Utility Demand Charges, (2) Power Factor, (3) Harmonics and IEEE 519 and (4) Savings.

SEPTEMBER

  • Meeting postponed!


OCTOBER

  • Mr Stephen Legister, Manager, Enterprise Networking, Comtech Ltd was the main speaker at the Jamaica Section monthly meeting held on Wednesday 23, October, 2002 at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel. The topic for presentation was Voice over IP (VoIP). The meeting commenced at 7:30pm.

NOVEMBER

  • The IEEE Communications Society - Jamaica Chapter hosted the monthly Jamaica Section meeting at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 at 7:30pm. The Feature presentation was given by Sean Clacken, Sales Manager (Kingston) of Hawkeye Electronic Security Ltd. The Topic was the CCtv - Transition to Digital Recording. The discussion included: The advantages of digital over analogue (VHS) recording; Features of the Intellex Digital Recorder; Remote video surveillance over network/telephone lines.

DECEMBER

  • A dinner was held at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in celebration of IEEE Jamaica Section's 25th anniversary, on Friday, December 6, 2002. The guest speaker for the event was Mr Everton Davis, Manager of Comtech Ltd.
  • The Annual General Meeting of the Jamaica Section was held on December 18, 2002 at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in Kingston.
