JAMAICA SECTION ACTIVITIES -2003

HIGHLIGHTS

The Jamaica Section was the major host for SoutheastCon 2003 which was held at the Renaissance Jamaica Grande Resort in Ocho Rios, Jamaica April 4-6, 2003. SoutheastCon is the annual Region 3 technical, professional, and student conference. It brings together electrical and computer engineering professionals and students to share the latest information through technical sessions, tutorials and exhibits. The student conference is a major part of SoutheastCon and the University of Technology, Jamaica was the host and sponsor of this conference.

The student program was organized in five sections; the hardware, software, website, paper and T-shirt competitions. UTech designed all competitions. One hundred and ninety six (196) students and twenty (20) branch counsellors from thirty two (32) universities in the southeastern USA registered for the conference. The student program was the most successful event of SoutheastCon 2003.

JANUARY

  • A meeting of the Jamaica Section was held at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel on Wednesday, January 15, 2003. The main presentation - Machine Vision - was given by Mr Butch Shadwell of Shadwell Technical Services, in Jacksonville, Florida. (www.shadtechserv.com)

FEBRUARY

  • The monthly Section meeting was held at the Engineering Conference Room (3rd Floor Engineering Bldg) at the University of Technology, Jamaica, on Wednesday, February 19, 2003 at 7:30pm. The main presentation was - The application of: circuit breakers (moulded case), panel boards, switchboards and magnetic starters & motor control centers. The speaker was Mr. Julio C Rios, Large Project Sales Specialist, GE Industrial Systems.

  • Preparation for SoutheastCon 2003 was in high gear!

  • SoutheastCon 2003.

  • Executive Committee meeting.


JUNE

  • Executive Committee Meeting.

JULY

  • The main presentation at the Jamaica Section monthly meeting on Wednesday, July 16, 2003 was given by Mr Marvin Kelly, RF Engineer at Digicel Jamaica Ltd. The topic was: Fuzzy Recognition of Cricket Batting Strokes, of Body and Bat Postures. The venue was the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in Kingston. The meeting commenced at 6:00 pm.

AUGUST

  • The President of The Jamaica Amateur Radio Association Mr Basil Davidson , was the main presenter at the Jamaica Section monthly meeting on Wednesday, August 20, 2003. His topic was: Amateur Radio/Internet Applications. An overview of the Jamaica Amateur Radio Association and the its role including disaster mitigation was also presented. The Internet Radio Linking Project (IRLP) as one of the new methods used in Jamaica for linking radio systems via the Internet was also described. The venue was the Norman Manley Suite at The Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in Kingston. The meeting was hosted by the IEEE Communications Society - Jamaica Chapter.

SEPTEMBER

  • Internet Everywhere: GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) was the topic presented by Mr Iain Mcfayden, Network Development, Cable & Wireless, Jamaica, at the Jamaica Section monthly meeting held at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel on September 17, 2003.

    The presentation reviewed the development of an Internet-enabled culture in Jamaica, and the almost constant need to be able to access the World Wide Web. Access methods from dial-up to ADSL, to progress in mobile solutions was also reviewed.

    The basic building blocks of GPRS and GSM were highlighted. The capabilities of the Cable & Wireless implementation of GPRS in the Caribbean, and applications possible with the introduction of GPRS was explained.
    The meeting was hosted by the IEEE Communications Society - Jamaica Chapter.


OCTOBER

  • Mr Mohinder Dick - Information Systems Specialist - of the Jamaica Public Service Ltd, presented the topic: Handhelds in Data Collection and Analysis - at the Jamaica Section monthly meeting on Wednesday, October 15, 2003 at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel.

    The meeting was hosted jointly by the Jamaica Chapters of the IEEE Computer and Communications Societies.


NOVEMBER

  • Optical Fibre Technology was the topic for discussion at the Jamaica Section meeting on Wednesday, November 19, 2003 at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel. The presenter was Mr Donovan Leigh James, Registered Communications Distribution Designer - 3M Telecommunications (Caribbean & Latin America Region). The presentation included: 1) An overview of Optical Fibre Technology, 2) Splicing methods, 3) Comparison with other transmission media, and 4) Regulations regarding fibre to the curb.

    The meeting was hosted by The Jamaica Chapter of the IEEE Communications Society.


DECEMBER

  • Annual General Meeting (a presentation of reports and election of officers) was held at Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, Wednesday, December 17, 2003. The selection of the Nominations Committee for the Executive Committees - 2004 for the Section and the Communications and Computer Societies was ratified at the meeting.
