The first IEEE student branch in Jamaica was organized
in 1989 by Dr K.K.Murty, at
The University of Technology, Jamaica, (UTech) (formerly The
College of Arts, Science and Technology (CAST)). Students from
this branch were invited to attend the Southeastern Conference
(SoutheastCon), IEEE Region 3's premier event, held during spring
break each year, to participate in the Paper Contest.
A student branch was re-established at The University
of Technology, Jamaica (UTech) in August 2000.. Three members
of the Jamaica Section Executive Committee, and twelve students and
lecturers from the Faculty of Engineering & Computing at UTech
attended SoutheastCon 2001, at Clemson University, South Carolina,
USA, March 30 - April 1. The students participated in the major
competitions at the conference and won first place in the
T-Shirt, and honours certificates in the hardware, web page, and
paper competitions.
Southeastcon 2003
The University of Technology, Jamaica and the IEEE student branch
were the hosts of the student conference of SoutheastCon 2003
held in Jamaica, at the Renaissance Jamaica Grande Resort in Ocho
Rios, April 4-6, 2003. One hundred and ninety six (196) students
in addition to twenty (20) branch counsellors from thirty two
universities registered for the conference. The student programme
of the IEEE conference included hardware, software, website, student
paper and T-shirt competitions. The student conference was a major
success.
