About IEEE North Carolina Council

Overview

Formed from the North Carolina Chapters of the IRE and AIEE in 1965, the IEEE North Carolina Council (NCC) consists of five IEEE sections in North Carolina. The North Carolina Council acts an intermediary between the five sections and IEEE Region 3, also known as Area 2, is one of 9 Areas/Councils in IEEE Region 3. The five IEEE sections served by the North Carolina Council are listed on the Sections webpage.

2012 Officers and Council Committee

The officers of the North Carolina Council are the Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer (Secretary/Treasurer may be combined in any given year). The Council Committee consists of the officers of the Council, the most recent Past Chair, the Chair of each Constituent Section, and chairs of Standing Committees.

    Council Chair:
    Tom Weldon
    Biography: Thomas Weldon, Ph.D., P.E., is a Senior Member of IEEE with over 30 years of experience in academia and industry. He received his Ph.D. from Penn State, and his career includes experience at Motorola, Skyworks (formerly Alpha Ind.), and BAE systems (formerly AEL). He currently serves as an Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at UNC Charlotte.
    Council Vice Chair:
    Grayson Randall
    Biography: Grayson Randall is President at Insight Technologies, a company that develops software that controls autonomous, semi-autonomous, and teleoperated robots systems. Insight provides design, development, and system integration services.
    Council Secretary:
    Valentina Cecchi
    Biography: Valentina Cecchi, Ph.D., is a Member of IEEE. Originally from Italy, she completed her doctoral studies in electrical engineering from Drexel University in Philadelphia, with a concentration in electric power systems. She is currently at UNC Charlotte as Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and researcher in the Energy Production and Infrastructure Center (EPIC).

    Jim Corr
    Biography: James L. Corr, BEE, MSEE, JD. Is a Senior Member of the IEEE with over 40 years experience in industry. His career included the US Air Force, McDonnel Douglas Aircraft Co. – DC9 Autopilot, Hughes Aircraft Co. – Ground Systems, and IBM. He retired from IBM in 2002 after 25 years, where he did microprocessor development diagnostic systems – most recently the PowerPC Fault Diagnostic System.
    Central NC Section Chair:
    Ibraheem Kateeb
    Biography: Ibraheem Kateeb Ph.D., is a Senior Member of IEEE with over 20 years of experience in academia and industry. He received his Ph.D. from NCA&TSU. He is currently at NCA&TSU as Assistant Professor of Electronics, Computer, and Information Technology. His current research is on green energy, and control-robotics.
    Charlotte Section Chair:
    Nate Quirk
    Biography: Nate Quirk is a Senior Associate with Alston & Bird who counsels clients with regard to procuring and protecting intellectual property rights through patents. Mr. Quirk’s experience includes preparing and prosecuting patent applications in a broad range of electrical and computer technologies, including power systems and power system protection, wireless communications and networking technologies, and radio frequency identification (RFID).
    Eastern NC Section Chair:
    Tom Jepsen
    Biography: Chair, Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS) chapter of IEEE ENCS. BA, University of Colorado; graduate work in computer science, NC State University. Consultant, health IT. Author, Java in Telecommunications, Distributed Storage Networks. Member, IEEE USA Medical Technology Policy Committee; Health IT editor, IEEE IT Professional Magazine. Lives in Chapel Hill.
    Western NC Section Chair:
    Brian Kowald
    Biography: Brian Kowald , BSEE (Computer Systems Emphasis) is a member of the IEEE with over 25 years of experience with past employers such as Texas Instruments and Synergy Broadcast Systems. He currently works for RevealData, a company that develops e-discovery software for the legal industry. He has also been a First Robotics mentor for 7 years.
    Winston-Salem Section Chair:
    Bill Williams
    Biography: Bill Williams is a Senior Member of IEEE and a member of Sigma Xi and the New York Academy of Sciences. After service in the U.S. Air Force and graduate school at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine of Wake Forest Univ., he worked in the medical division of Litton Industries and also at Picker International as Product Manager for Ultrasound, Nuclear Medicine, and Clinical Lab products. He now consults in product development, regulatory affairs, and marketing in the medical field.

    Forrest Suter
    Biography: Forrest Suter is currently Secretary of the Charlotte Chapter of the IEEE Power and Energy Society and a graduate student at UNC Charlotte pursuing a M.S. in Electrical Engineering with a concentration in Power Systems. Forrest earned a B.S. in Electrical Engineering, cum laude, from UNC Charlotte in 2011 and served as the student chapter Chair, doubling the number of student members and helping start a student W.I.E affinity group.
