Section Chairs
Subject: Reg. 3 Director's Message - Fall Meeting
State of Region
3
Region 3 has 8.2% of total IEEE membership in
its 41 sections (12.9% of total sections). It is currently the sixth largest
region, with 28,984 total members at the end of August.
In 2007, its 41
sections received rebates totaling $221,296, including bonuses totaling
$18,712. All 41 sections received a rebate and only 3 sections failed to
earn the prompt reporting bonus.
There are 86 student branches
reporting student members; the total number of student members is
4,439.
Region Awards
The 2007 award for
section membership growth went to the Tallahassee section.
The 2007
Outstanding Large Section Award went to the Melbourne Section,
For
successful efforts in fulfilling IEEEs education and scientific goals for the
benefit of the public by maintaining, enhancing, and supporting the Student
Branches, Technical Chapters, and Affinity Groups.
The 2007 award
for growth in student branch membership went to the Columbia sections
University of South Carolina branch. Six student branches have over 200
members each.
Region Activity
Our 41 sections in
2006 held 177 meetings. There were 126 chapter meetings and 30 meetings of
affinity groups, for a total of 333 meetings.
Eight chapters or
groups are on the watch list, for not having a minimum of two meetings per year
for three years running. One other chapter will be dissolved for having
zero activity for three years.
Region Funding
In 2008, the region
allocation will increase by 18%, or $12,538. Region funding for Sections
Congress has been increased from $19,505 in 2005 to $23,220 in 2008.
Section Support Via Region is funded at $150 per section, as of February in the
previous year. It will amount to $6,150 in 2008.
Section Reporting
Section officers
are reminded that their lifeline to section support is correct officer
identification and current email addresses. Changes in ISP are cause for
notifying the Region 3 Secretary (d.green@ieee.org) and/or redirecting IEEE
aliases. Likewise, changes in any officer positions during the year should
be reported, both to Region 3 and to georoster@ieee.org . Review the
Region 3 roster to ensure that your officer information is correct, and the
Region 3 Geographic Roster at www.ieee.org/roster (access using your web
account).

Strategic Plan
The
Region 3 Strategic Plan is found at http://ewh.ieee.org/reg/3/excom/meetings/2007-0910/sp2007-rev.pdf
. Further information on the nine Region initiatives and projects is
available. You can help the Region help you, with your
assistance.
IEEE Mentoring
An
outgrowth of the earlier Region 3 program, Leadership by Developing Others
(LDO) the IEEE Mentoring Connection Program seeks online mentors to assist
younger professionals in career planning and professional development.
Mentor participation is open to all IEEE members above the grade of Student
Member. Ten states in Region 3 plus Jamaica are represented in Region 3
among the 64 countries globally participating in the mentoring program.

volunteer, contact Cathy Downer at c.downer@ieee.org .
Best
Practices
Earlier Region 3 meetings
developed a list, and your help in expanding it is needed. When one
section finds an innovation that attracts more members to meetings, or pioneers
remote meetings or finds a project that serves its members, the recipe often
can be useful for other sections as well. Please take the time to help us
expand the list of Best Practices by sharing your information. What works
for you? What didnt work but could have? What lessons did you
learn? Send your tips and suggestions to g.mcclure@ieee.org or w.ratcliff@ieee.org so that others
can benefit from your efforts.
Please Vote!
Region
3s slogan is IEEE is the Member and the Member is IEEE. By voting in
the annual election of officers you can insure that your wishes are reflected in
the leadership chosen for IEEE. Please vote online before noon on November
