Strategic Planning Committee Report

1.       Region 3 Spring meeting- will be held in Atlanta, 6-8 March 2009, at the Crowne Plaza hotel.  The section chair (or proxy) should plan to attend. Registration and hotel reservations can be made at www.sec09.com.  The hotel rate is $115/night plus tax.  The slate of candidates for Region 3 Director-Elect for 2010-2011 will be considered at this meeting.
2.       Meeting listings – Central Florida Business is now printing our meeting notices. Future notices should include at least the section web site and a contact telephone number. E-mail announcements, at least one week before publication to: businessnews@orlandosentinel.com.  Include time, date, complete address, cost and contact phone.
3.       Meeting reports - Geographic units do not have to wait until the end of the year to submit their meeting reports.   Units are strongly encouraged to use the meeting report form available on the IEEE web site https://www.ieee.org/L31.
4.       A Life Member Group petition has attained the required six signatures of life members, to form a Life Member Affinity Group.  Section approval will be sought tonight.
5.      Membership Materials – Have been updated and should be available at every section/chapter meeting.  The Reg. 3 Membership chair holds monthly e-conferences with section membership chairs.  L.stogner@ieee.org  Jim Howard is MD chair for the Florida Council.
6.     Elevator speeches – Each officer chairing a meeting within the section should open with a 30 second welcome, pointing out that meetings are available to all, and that membership is encouraged to gain full benefits from IEEE (including Financial Advantage and the Employment Navigator, with free access now for all IEEE members).  The video library (11 topic areas) plus books are available on a loan basis to members. Some are tapes of video conferences that run for several hours.   Membership materials should be available at each meeting.
7.    Updates Needed to Section Roster – Some of the  student branch officer listings now include only name and office – no way to contact these students.  Email addresses and phone numbers should be added for both UCF and DeVry.
8.    Section Event Advance Announcements- Feedback about the Christmas party showed that some members were unaware of it, especially life members.  At least one mailing each year should go to all members, and the postcard announcing a major event could be the vehicle selected.
9.    Volunteers Sought for RFID Conference – Volunteers signing up for at least four hours will receive a free lunch, access to the exhibits, and a CD of the conference proceedings. See the notice in the section newsletter urging student participation.  Life members can be another resource.  Dates are April 27-29 at the Disney Swan and Dolphin hotels.
