Rob Scruggs
I would like to offer my congratulations to all of the participants in the Annual Student Paper Competition. The students did an excellent job and all of the presentations were very impressive. There were three Clemson University students presenting this year and the results were as follows:
First Place ($200 Prize):
Rebekah Moore
Second Place ($150 Prize):
Justin Ingersoll
Third Place ($100 Prize):
Clint Smullen
Rebekah will be invited to go on to compete in the state competition in Columbia, and will represent Clemson University in the paper competition at SoutheastCon 2006. We all wish her the best of luck!
We had a good student turn out for this meeting, but I was very disappointed with the member attendance. I encourage you to please make an effort to attend this month’s meeting. We will be inviting local engineering students to meet with us to allow them the opportunity to talk with practicing engineers about work after college and the world of engineering beyond academia. It is my hope to have a broad range of career fields represented.
As always, if you have any topics that you would like to know more about, or if you would like to make a presentation at a future meeting, please don’t hesitate to contact me, or one of the other officers.
NETWORKING
Mark Stokes
Thursday, February, 23
In honor of National Engineers Week, this month’s meeting will be a networking session with upstate college/university students. The meeting is in Clemson, but other area colleges and university students are welcome to attend, especially May and August graduating seniors. This meeting will be an informal social atmosphere with an emphasis on introducing graduating seniors to Piedmont section members and industry professionals. A few introductory activities will be presented to encourage the interaction of students and IEEE members. Members are encouraged to bring business cards for distribution to students. We encourage as many professionals as possible to attend. The intention of this session is not a job search for the students, merely a chance to meet and interact with professionals of the same basic interests and to encourage students to continue participation in IEEE after graduation. However, if a job or two were garnered because of this meeting, I don’t think anyone would be upset.
Dinner will be served in classic college style with multiple varieties of pizzas. The meeting will be held on the campus of Clemson University at 100A Riggs Hall. Dinner is free for students, $5 for non-students.
