Cell Phones in Flight -- Tell Us What You Think

The Institute

Can radio frequency emissions from wireless devices interfere with an aircraft's critical flight control and navigation systems?  Researchers from Carnegie Mellon University, in Pittsburgh, underscore the need for more research as they reveal their latest findings on the possible hazards of using a cell phone or wireless device on an airliner in flight. Share your opinion on this controversial subject -- vote in the online poll on the IEEE

Calling All Entrepreneurs

IEEE-USA Today’s Engineer

IEEE-USA Committee Serves as Resource for New, Existing Entrepreneurs; Launches Specialized Web site.

A new committee created to deliver knowledge, experience and support to entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial businesses has been created by IEEE-USA.  The committee is launching a specialized Web site, called "IEEE-USA Entrepreneurs' Village," that is designed to provide both new and existing entrepreneurs tools they need to foster innovation and growth. According to IEEE-USA Entrepreneurs' Activities Committee (EAC) Co-Chairman Mauro Togneri, 85 percent of all innovation comes from small business.  The committee's objective is to help the United States maintain its competitive position in the global marketplace by providing new resources such as the "IEEE-USA Entrepreneurs' Village" for entrepreneurs and their businesses.  For more information, visit the "Village" at http://boldfish.ieee.org:80/u/2299/94410

PBS Seeks Engineer Co-Host for "Design Squad" Engineering Reality TV Program

IEEE-USA Today’s Engineer

WGBH Boston is seeking two co-hosts for "Design Squad," the working title for a new PBS engineering reality TV program aimed at 9- to 12-year-olds, which will begin shooting this summer in Boston.  During the program, two teams of real-life high-school youngsters (not actors) compete using their problem-solving skills to design, construct, and test functional, whimsical machines.  The engineer co-host must have an engineering degree or basic engineering education; a "natural and spontaneous nature"; and be comfortable in a learning/teaching environment with teens, as well as in front of a camera.  For more information on applying, go to http://boldfish.ieee.org:80/u/2303/94410

For a peek at a pilot of "Design Squad," see http://boldfish.ieee.org:80/u/2304/94410

IEEE-USA is seeking contributions to promote public awareness of engineering, through programs such as "Design Squad"; more information is available at http://boldfish.ieee.org:80/u/2305/94410
