A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Rob Scruggs

The IEEE Piedmont Section would like to extend CONGRATULATIONS to our student members who performed so well at SoutheastCon 2005. Clemson University student Vijay Ullal won FIRST PLACE in the Student Paper Competition, and the Hardware Competition Special Award for Best Parking went to the Clemson Hardware team. Great work guys!

Last year the Piedmont Section sponsored a cookout social for members and their families at Lake Keowee. I am interested in doing something similar again this year, but I would like to have a better turnout. I am thinking that an August or September date, possibly in combination with the student chapter, may be appropriate. If anyone has an opinion, would like to participate, or wants to volunteer to help with the arrangements, please contact me at r.scruggs@ieee.org.

** IMPORTANT Newsletter Notice **

Rob Scruggs

The Piedmont Section of the IEEE has a new exciting opportunity for a volunteer leadership position as “Champion” of the Teacher In-service Program (TISP). The program features engineers, guided by the initiative leaders, developing and presenting technologically oriented topics to pre-college educators in a professional development setting.   The program will be greatly enhanced through web-based resources and by improving the training and management of volunteers. To support the expansion of TISP, the IEEE is planning a training session for section champions to be held in Atlanta on July 23, 2005.  We have funding to cover the cost of travel for volunteers for this training, and to cover the cost of materials and supplies for developing a presentation for teachers.  If you are interested in the opportunity of "Launching our Children's Path to Engineering" by sharing your experience and enthusiasm for engineering, please contact one of the Piedmont Section officers.

FIRST Robotics Competition

Wayne Cockrell

Thursday, May, 19

This month we will hear from the Pendleton High School FIRST team. The FIRST Foundation (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1989 to interest and inspire students in mathematics and science. Their mission: FIRST designs accessible, innovative programs to build self-confidence, knowledge and life skills while motivating young people to pursue opportunities in science, technology and engineering. For over ten years FIRST has been sponsoring a robotics competition that tasks students from high schools with designing, building, and competing robots. Today, there are more than 600 teams participating nationwide and internationally, in 17 Regional events and a Championship event.
We will be hearing from self proclaimed “Robotics Princess” and Program Manager, Mandy Orzechowski. They will be bringing their robots for us to admire. Please come out and support these young engineers in training. Learn more about FIRST here: http://www.usfirst.org.
