Next Meeting

Clemson University Rockwell Automation Lab

Randy Collins

Plant (lab) tour of the new Rockwell Motors and Drives Laboratory at Clemson University.  A generous equipment donation from Rockwell Automation Power Systems has enabled the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Clemson University to develop a new motors and drives laboratory using state-of-the-art industrial motor controls. As a result, a laboratory has been renovated and equipped with three-phase power to house the workstations.  Laboratory experiments are tailored toward supplementing junior and senior-level undergraduate lecture classes.

The purpose of the workstations is to enable students to explore the operation of ac and dc motors when fed from state of the art adjustable speed drives. The workstations contain ac and dc motors, ac and dc drives, measuring instruments, data acquisition and control, a computer and laser printer, and a digital oscilloscope.

Where: Riggs Hall, Clemson University.  Actual meeting location will be posted on the front door to Riggs on the night of the meeting.

From Outsourcing to Plagiarism: The Candidates for President-Elect Respond

The candidates for 2005 IEEE President-Elect -- Michael R. Lightner, Levent Onural, and James M. Tien -- presented their views on issues critical to members at the 16th Annual Candidates Night, hosted by the Philadelphia Section in June. The three are on this year's election ballot. Read what they had to say at http://www.theinstitute.ieee.org

Offering Consultants a Helping Hand

For members turning to consulting for a living, the IEEE offers a host of products and services to help them run their businesses. Perhaps most useful are the IEEE Consultants' Networks where consultant-engineers can meet and discuss the trials and tribulations that many in one-person operations would otherwise face on their own. The networks also organize educational programs and that prerequisite of so many successful careers--networking opportunities. Find out more at http://www.theinstitute.ieee.org

In the Mood for Moog

He's collaborated with musical greats like Stevie Wonder, Mick Jagger, and Chick Corea, but for IEEE Life Member Bob Moog, his 50-year career in electronic musical instruments is all just an extension of work he did while tinkering as a kid in the basement of his New York City home. Read more about Moog at:

http://www.theinstitute.ieee.org

IEEE-USA TODAY'S ENGINEER

Topics: Offshore outsourcing, Ethics, and Tech education for kids.

Also for a "World Bytes" column on at-will employment, part two of the "Engineering in Pop Culture" feature on the Straphanger Centennial, and a "Backscatter" column on picking a winner, read the latest edition of *IEEE-USA Today's Engineer* online at: http://www.todaysengineer.org

NSPE, IEEE-USA TO SPONSOR ONLINE SEMINAR ON OFFSHORE OUTSOURCING

NSPE and IEEE-USA will join forces to present an online seminar on "Outsourcing and the U.S. Engineering Community," on 22 September, from 12:30-2:30 p.m. This seminar will help you understand the policy implications of this issue, and how it could affect your career.

New Automation Journal

Interested in automation?  IEEE has a new journal: IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering (T-ASE), an exciting new journal from the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society.

T-ASE reaches beyond mass production to include interdisciplinary approaches from computer science, control systems, electrical engineering, mathematics, mechanical engineering, operations research and other fields.

With such a wide scope, this new journal should be of interest to many of your readers -- both as subscribers and as potential authors.

Engineering the Vote

Lee Stogner

Chair, IEEE-USA Government Activities Committee

As Chair of the IEEE-USA Government Activities Committee, I want to make you aware of a new web site that encourages Engineers to participate in the upcoming elections.  The site is called, "Engineering the Vote", and can be found at, http://www.engineeringthevote.org/

Additional detail on what IEEE-USA is doing to promote issues that are important to Electrical Engineers can be found at, http://www.ieeeusa.org/COMMITTEES/gac/

Please explore these two web sites and encourage all of your fellow Engineers to make their vote count.
