Senior Member Update Letter

Lee Stogner

Piedmont Section,

IEEE has announced the results from the November 15 A&A meeting that evaluated and elevated 99 Region 3 members to Senior status. This means that Region 3 exceeded the IEEE goals by over 20% to a total of 220 for 2003. My congratulations to everyone that was upgraded and to all of the references that supported their candidates. With these numbers in, we can announce the winners in our Senior Member Upgrade Contest,

Each of these Sections will receive a check for $100. Again thanks for all of your support and let's see how many more Region 3 (and Piedmont) members we can recognize and elevate in 2004. Maybe we should set a goal of becoming the Region 3 Section with the highest overall percentage of Senior Members.

I would like to give special thanks to Dr. John Gowdy and Jody Warren for providing references that supported most of the following eight Piedmont Section members that were upgraded to Senior status,

Albert Bianco
Adib T. Chebli
Steven T. Evon
Paul E. Jamieson
Sam G. Parler, Jr.
Robert G. Tangerini
Allen K. Thomas
James R. Timms

If you would like to upgrade to Senior Member, please visit the IEEE web site at,
http://www.ieee.org/organizations/rab/md/smprogram.html.  Just follow the online instructions and let us know if you need help in finding local references.

Thanks,

Lee Stogner

National Engineers Week 2004 is coming soon!

National Engineers Week (EWeek) was founded in 1951 by the National Society of Professional Engineers. It is always celebrated at the time of George Washington's birthday. Our nation's first president was a military engineer and a land surveyor. The mission then, and now, is to increase public awareness and appreciation of the engineering profession.

IEEE members are encouraged to get involved by organizing and participating in EWeek programs and events – especially at the local level. A wealth of resources is available on the Web to aid you in your efforts. Bookmark the official EWeek website –www.eweek.org – and consult it frequently for ideas, tips and resources. From awards banquets to hands-on activities for elementary school students, there are scores of ways to celebrate EWeek. If you are looking for ways to participate in an EWeek program or event for your Section or Chapter, now is the best time to start planning. For more information, visit: http://www.eweek.org/site/Engineers/organize.shtml. IEEE-USA’s EWeek Website http://www.ieeeusa.org/eweek

IEEE-USA Hails Congressional Passage of "Nanotechnology Research & Development Act"

Pender M. McCarter
IEEE-USA

WASHINGTON (20 November 2003): Passage today by the U.S. Congress of "The Nanotechnology Research and Development Act" will "help fuel future economic growth, enhance public health and the quality of life, as well as sustain U.S. leadership in science, engineering and technology" said Jim V. Leonard, president of IEEE-USA. "Nanotechnology research and development is in its infancy, but the promise of nanotechnology to usher in a new industrial age is unquestionable," Leonard added. Nanotechnology can be described as the observation and manipulation of materials at the molecular and atomic levels
