Chairman : Next Meeting : Officers
Mark Stokes
Here we are at the last IEEE newsletter of this century! I wanted to round out this last newsletter with a vision of what this section of the IEEE needs from you, our members, to maintain itself in the coming years.
First Ill briefly talk about the last years or two. Over the last couple of years, our section has lost a couple of our key volunteers, Dave Hulett, Nancy Gunderson, and Steven Bobo. Each of these people added a tremendous amount of energy and new vision to our section. However, over the past couple of years, these people have, for very important reasons, had to leave our section. This means that the positions that those people held have become vacant. Dave Hulett, for example, started us on the downhill slope to Southeast Con 2001. I am very excited that this conference is being held in Clemson thanks to his help in coordinating a proposal and starting the committee to see it to its completion. I have since been helping coordinate this function and have found many rewards in helping this conference come together.
As an officer for this section, I have found many rewards elsewhere. In 1998, I was asked to go to leadership training in Orlando at SeCon 1998. While there, I met a lot of very interesting people and was able to network with all sorts of other engineers in all parts of the country. The best part was that since I was an officer, the section picked up many of my travel and meal expenses. During the Hardware competition, I was able to have conversations with some of the students about their hardware designs and learn a few new tricks.
Other conferences I have attended as an officer include Sections Congress. This is a meeting of all of the sections around the world. Something like 700 delegates from all ten regions came together to discuss the future of the IEEE and what to do as section leaders to make the sections better. Again, the IEEE picked up the expense for me to travel to Minneapolis, MN for the three-day conference and again I was able to network with many other professionals across the world about jobs, culture, and technology. At the end of the congress, all of the delegates converged in a large room and voted on the order of importance of the forty recommendations being made to the IEEE. Other meetings have included various executive committee meetings both for the section and the region (we are in Region 3, Southeastern, USA). These meetings also shape their respective area of involvement in the IEEE.
You may have noticed that this year we did not have officer elections. This is because I received no nominations for any of the officers with the exception of Vice Chair, Wayne Cockrell. Wayne has filled in as Treasurer and Secretary for the last year and is now moving up once more. This means we have vacancies in the Treasurer and Secretary positions. These positions are very easy to perform and I urge you to nominate your fellow engineer, or yourself! We need more leadership in this section and it can only come from within.
In closing, I want to urge you to seriously consider being an officer and getting something extra from the IEEE. I wish you and your family happy holidays and the best of luck in the coming millennium.

Christmas Party
Mark Stokes
Well, ok, this party really has nothing to do with Christmas with the exception that it falls within the Christmas/holiday season. This years party will be held at my house in Clemson again, since we have no new chairperson to take over. There will be snack foods and munchies for all to enjoy. Please bring your significant others since the "program" this meeting will primarily center on socializing.
I am asking for an RSVP so that I can gauge the number of people we will be having. Please send all RSVP's to my home phone number (654-5853) or my email address. My address in Clemson is 322 Frontage Road.
Directions from Easley: West on Hy123, turn south on hy93 (at the Winn Dixie) and cross over 123. Make the first (immediate) left after 123 (before the gasoline station). Mine is the last house on the right before you hit Berkley Avenue.
The directions are only slightly different when coming from Seneca. It is better to go into Clemson before turning onto Hy93. From this direction, make a left at the light at Hy93 and then make an immediate right.
From Anderson, enter Clemson on Hy76 and turn north on Hy93 (right). Frontage road is the last road before you hit Hy123 (after the gasoline station at the light).
And finally, if there is still a problem finding my house, call me at: 654-5853.
