A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Nancy Gunderson
Welcome to the 1998 newsletter! In the “message from the chair” section this year, I hope to present topics for discussion or interest.
First topic: Would moving the section meeting to a night other than the third Thursday allow more members to attend? The proposal came from a member who was able to attend the December meeting because his other commitment which regularly interfered did not meet. The officers feel either the second or third Tuesday of each month would be the other alternatives. Let your officers know your opinion!! Only the January and February meetings have been scheduled, so the rest of the year is up for grabs. The day with the most votes wins!
Second topic: Is there a need among our members for a seminar on the Internet? If so, does it need to be more introductory or advanced?
If you want to use standard mail to respond, my address is Nancy Gunderson, 803 S. Hogan Dr., Westminster, SC 29693. Email and phone calls are also welcome.

Next Meeting

January 22, 1997
Student Presentation Contest
Mark Stokes
As it has traditionally been, the January meeting will be the Student Presentation Contest. This year we are trying to de-emphasize the innovative/technical difficulty of the paper, and placing more emphasis on the presentation skills of the student. In past years we have found students shying away from the contest because they “Don’t have anything they would feel comfortable presenting to an IEEE section.” We also know that many students present papers as part of their regular electrical engineering classes. We still feel that technical accuracy is very important, so this will still be a part of the judging. The new title of this meeting (from previous years) will hopefully convey this new position.
Meeting details:
When: Thursday, January 22 Location: Ramada Inn, Clemson (located on the corner of Hy 123 and Hy 76) Dinner will be served. 6:30-7:00 Social 1/2 Hour
7:00-7:30 Dinner
7:30-9:00 Presentation
The cost is $10.00 for members and guests and $5.00 for students. Please make reservations by calling one of the officers by Tuesday, January 20, 1998, even if you don’t plan to eat.

Next Month’s Meeting

Steven Bobo
FEBRUARY 19, 1998
The Piedmont section will hold a NETWORKING session on February 19th with May and August graduates of Clemson University. We plan to have the NETWORKING session on campus with hors d’oeuvres’. The time and exact location on campus will be in the February edition of pIEEEdmont Potential. Our goal is to introduce these future engineers to as many companies as possible in order to support the future IEEE members we encourage attendance from as many members as possible.

From the Editor

Mark Stokes
I have decided that with all of the problems of the newsletter being delivered late, I am going to bump the deadline date for the newsletter up to the first week of the month in which it is to be published. I hope to push this date up even further in the coming months.
Over the past couple of months, I have been trying to get a current newsletter email list for our section. This is a bit difficult since the database program provided by IEEE doesn’t tell me the changes to the database (which is updated each month), it just changes them. Anyway, I hope that many of you (about 200) have received the newsletter via email. Your email address is now part of the IEEE database. Please try to remember to call IEEE (or visit their web site) any time you change your email address (of course also for any of your personal information as well). This will save the over 30 undeliverable mail messages I receive each time I send out a newsletter.
Remember, the pIEEEdmont Potential is still available via three methods:
