Our meeting this month will offer a unique opportunity to hear one of
the leading architects of Intel's Pentium Pro chip, Mr. Gurbir Singh. This will be one
meeting you definitely don't want to miss. Remember that the meeting is held on the campus
of Clemson University this time. Please call ahead for reservations and feel free to bring
along interested guests. I hope to see you there.
Last month we had an outstanding presentation by Dr. William Mawby on the subject of
Design of Experiments. Dr. Mawby addressed the topic in a clear and concise manner and the
presentation was very informative to those in attendance.
The "challenge" still stands. I am asking each of you, as members of the
Piedmont Section, to attend at least three section meetings in 1996. Please make the time
to attend the meetings, and enjoy the high quality presentations and the fellowship of
other electrical engineers living and working in this area. Your presence matters.
Selected data from the 1995 IEEE-USA Salary and Fringe Benefits Survey is now available at http://www.ieee.org/usab under the "Career and Member Services" section. At this location you will find charts for:
In addition, a hard copy of the Survey is on its way to the Piedmont
Section. It will be available to the members for reference at future section meetings.
One area of keen interest to the members of the Piedmont Section is the
activities of the IEEE on the government level. The IEEE is very involved in this domain
and has some clearly stated positions on several issues. You may obtain information on
this subject by pointing your web browser to IEEE-USA's home page at
http://www.ieee.org/usab IEEE-USA government relations information is also available by
e-mail. Information include IEEE-USA's Public Policy Agenda for the 104th Congress
(info.ieeeusa.agenda@ieee.org), a list of current IEEE-USA position statements
(info.ieeeusa.pos@ieee.org), and the IEEE-USA Legislative Report newsletter
(info.ieeeusa.legrpt@ieee.org). To obtain these documents, send an e-mail request to the
indicated address (no subject line or text message required). An auto response text file
will be automatically returned to your e-mail address.
The Piedmont Section will be offering a Design of Experiments (DOE)
Workshop in the Fall. This is a excellent opportunity for individuals and businesses in
this area to learn how to get started in this field. DOE is a collection of statistical
methods for systematically carrying out studies for product and process improvements in
the most efficient manner. DOE is especially useful when there are a large number of
variables involved. This field can be applied to all industries, and its implementation
does not require the user to be an expert on statistics.
The DOE Workshop will take place on a Saturday in mid November. It will be held in
Greenville (Colonial Inn), and will be a full day class. The workshop will be presented by
Dr. Mawby, Statistician, who was also the speaker for our June meeting.
The Piedmont Section is sponsoring and subsidizing this seminar as a part of its
non-profit mission to promote technology in our area. For planning purposes, the proposed
registration fee is around $50 per member, and $60 for non-members. The fee includes lunch
and snacks. (The fee information is dependent on the final arrangements and may vary).
Look for more details in the next issue of this newsletter and on the Piedmont Section Web
site. However, if you or your company are interested in attending the seminar, please call
or e-mail one of the officers now and let us know. We would like to hear from you because
we are interested in tailoring the seminar to the needs of the engineers in the upstate,
and we also like to get a good estimate of the number of attendees.
The IEEE Educational Activities Department has published the Career Asset Manager to aid engineers with career management. The notebook has three parts, CAMInfo, CAMIndex, and CAMPlan.
CAMInfo provides advice and information on a variety of topics including mentoring, networking, and strategies for maintaining technical viability. CAMIndex goes beyond most other career advice books by providing a place to store and organize career related records. Having all the information at your fingertips makes writing a resume easier! CAMPlan is a tool for goal setting, self-assessment, and professional planning.
We will have more information at the meeting, and take orders at the next two meetings. We can all benefit from the volume discount by combining our orders.
Gurbir Singh, principal engineer with Intel Corporation, will speak on the development
of the Pentium Pro microprocessor at the July 25 meeting of the Piedmont Section of the
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. As one of the four senior architects of
the Pentium Pro, Mr. Singh offers a unique perspective into the evolution of the most
well-known family of microprocessors. Mr. Singh received a Master of Science Degree in
Electrical Engineering from Clemson in 1979. He has been with Intel in Portland Oregon for
over 12 years, earning numerous patents stemming from his work in the architectural
development of five high-performance microprocessors. He returns to address the IEEE
Piedmont Section and Student Branch members at Clemson University.
The meeting will be held in 301 Rhodes Research Center on the campus of Clemson University
at 7:30 PM on Thursday, July 25, 1996. For reservations, please contact one of the
officers listed in this newsletter by Tuesday, July 23, 1996. Directions to Rhodes: From
HY123, take HY93 toward Clemson. Turn on Williamson road onto campus (light by Hardees).
Follow and veer left at Palmetto Blvd. Follow Palmetto to the circle and proceed left. The
Library is on the right and Rhodes is on the left. Parking passes will be provided if
necessary. Do not park in a service vehicle space!! More detailed directions are available
in the web version of this newsletter.
I am still offering the newsletter in electronic form via e-mail for any member (or student) who wishes to receive it. There are still a few bugs to work out. One work around is to browse over to the web version of the newsletter. The web version can be found under the section web site listed above. The web version is usually posted a week or so before the paper version and is usually more accurate (because it is easier to update). If you would like to receive the newsletter via e-mail or wish to just check out the electronic form of the newsletter instead of the paper version, please contact me. Using either of these methods will greatly reduce the costs associated with mailing the paper version via USPS.
