A PUBLICATION OF THE PIEDMONT SECTION OF THE IEEE

June, 2001

http://www.carol.net/ieee/

Message from the Chair

Mark Stokes

Well, I had promised the Executive committee that I would publish a paper copy of the newsletter this month, however, it hasn't happened. I'll get one out for the September meeting. Just wanted to give you a few things to remember. First, the Piedmont section observes summer break for the months of July and August. There wil be no meetings during that time. In September, we typically kick off the fall with a plant tour. I am currently looking into a return to the GSP Airport. We have a number of future meeting topics and will be persuing them over the coming months. I will try to let you know as soon as I do about these meetings.

The first (as far as I know) totally Piedmont Section sponsored meeting went well. I am pretty sure all those present enjoyed their free dinner. I hope to be able to offer more of these free dinners in the future.

We still have room for officers in our executive committee. I urge you, if you're interested in serving the Piedmont section to check the newsletter archives for postings I have made ("Message from the Chair") about the many benefits to this type of service.

Plastics and Composite in the EE industry

Mark Stokes

This month our topic will cover an area that is usually overlooked my mose systems engineers, the enclosure. This month's speaker is Tom Drye, a Technical Sales Representative from LNP Engineering Plastics. LNP produces cost-effective, high performance thermoplastic compounds. Through a secial "Liquid Nitrogen Processing" method, LNP uses a cryogenic process to grind plastic materials without them being broken down. LNP offers many "standard" products as well as offering special formulas for a specific need. During our meeting, Tom will be discussing the "Stat-Kon" - Statically Conductive and EMI/RFI shielding plastic composites and the "Konduit" - Thermally Conductive composites. For more information about LNP Corporation, please visit their web page at: http://www.lnp.com .

From one of our members:

IEEE Term Life Insurance

Nick Pasquerilla

The IEEE has had term life insurance available to its members for many years. Since I work at a company that has life insurance and purchased life insurance through the company I never paid much attention to the IEEE policy. Recently I went through and analysed my life insurance needs and decided I needed more. I came to find out that I should have looked at the IEEE policy sooner! The IEEE rate was much less costly than my company rate. Currently I have 2 times the amount of coverage for 40% less cost.

Non-IEEE News:

The Kronia Group, a group of scholars, researchers and scientists is proposing a radical new model of an "electric universe." They are hosting an upcoming world conference INTERSECT 2001. It will be of particular interest to electrical engineers because of the new information being presented.
