Another recent appointment worth noting is the new position of "Student Branch Mentor" that has been filled by Michael Duralia of Square D. Mr. Duralia will be the liaison between industry and the Student Branch at Clemson. The Student Branch Mentor program has been tried successfully at 39 other student branches.
Control over the Piedmont Section web page has been transferred from the Clemson Student to the Section. The pages are now completely updated with useful information about the Section and its activities. Please check it out. I would like to thank the graduating Student Branch Chairman, Michael Cotsford, for his valuable help in starting the Web pages. I would like to express my appreciation to Carolina Online, Inc. for providing free Web space for the Section. The current address for our web page is http://www.carol.net/ieee/. Please set your bookmarks accordingly.
Allen Thomas, the Membership Development Committee Chairman, has drafted a letter that he will be sending to IEEE new-comers in our area. The letter welcomes these engineers and provides them with information about our section. If you come in contact with electrical engineers just arriving to the Piedmont area, let them know about the IEEE activities in town, and bring them to a meeting.
The Section sent representatives Glenn Bischof (Vice Chair) and Nancy Gunderson (Secretary) to the Region 3 Meeting at SoutheastCon'96 in Tampa in March. Our representatives participated in the PACE meetings, in the Area 7/SC Council meeting, and in the Region 3 Sections and General Meetings. They gained better understanding of the workings of the IEEE at the region level, which will help them in their future office functions. One thing that came out of the Sections meeting is that most sections are having problems getting good attendance at their meetings...
...Now I know that WE will not have this problem at our section because I have challenged each one of YOU back in April to attend at least THREE (3) meetings this year. We have six meetings left, including the Christmas party. Pick any three. The challenge still stands!
CHALLENGE from the CHAIRMAN to all MEMBERS: "Attend three (3) section meetings this year!"
The presentation this month will describe in general the field of design of experiments. Other related issues from the area of statistics, system identification, and quality control may also be discussed. The talk will set the stage for an all-day seminar on this subject to be offered this fall by the Piedmont Section. This is a good opportunity to get a sneak preview of the seminar, and to bring forth related problems from your industry to be used as case studies later at that conference.
Mr. William Mawby will be the speaker this month. Mr. Mawby is a statistician with Michelin North America. He is very involved in the design of experiments program of that company and hosts a yearly conference on the subject. The meeting will be held at the Colonial Inn on Wade Hampton Blvd in Greenville on Thursday, June 20, 1996.
