A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Glenn Bishof

Pack your own Chute.
Organization which have the need for packing parachutes, the military and civilian jump clubs, have one of the most effective quality control policies in the world. All of the people packing the parachutes have to know how to sky dive. At any time, someone may come out to the packing floor, pick up a recently packed chute and hand it to one of the packers. The selected packer must take the chute and use it to jump from an airplane. Knowing that you may have to use the parachute that you are packing certainly promotes careful work. Would you bet your life on your work? Would you even bet your money on your work?
The analogies of this little job description to people’s jobs in manufacturing are obvious, but what about other positions within a company?
Design engineers: are you designing a product that you would want to use? Would you be willing to have the retrofit expenses for a design error deducted from your check? Managers: Would you be willing to have the wages of your subordinates deducted from your pay check every time they wasted time because of your incomplete or erroneous instructions? Expense account users: would your expenses be the same if one of your trip or entertainment expense report totals was going to be selected at random and deducted from your salary once per month?
Members of professional organizations (like IEEE): Would you try to get more out of your membership by attending meetings and getting involved if you were paying your membership dues?

Compressed Video Applications in South Carolina

Nancy Gunderson

Video conferencing is featured in half the telecommunications’ companies advertising, but what does it really take to use it? Mr. Danny Lee, PE, will discuss compressed video applications, including the technology, ISDN, the terminology, the cost, and South Carolina applications. Mr. Lee will demonstrate a live video call from Greenville Tech to another location using video conferencing equipment. This presentation is similar to the one he made for the South Carolina Council of Engineering Societies Conference in January of this year.
Speaker background:
A native of Columbia, SC, Mr. Danny Lee, PE, presently works in this South Carolina State Budget and Control Board Office of Information Services, as a Customer Services Consultant for Broadband Applications. He had previously retired from BellSouth in 1995, after 31 years of service. His last position was Manager of Network Marketing Support where he was responsible for broadband planning, major accounts technical consulting, and switch planning in South Carolina.
Meeting details:
Date: Thursday, June 19, 1997
Location: University Center, of the Greenville Technical College
Time: 7:30 p.m.

And, of course, since there is no meal, there is no "charge". But please make reservations anyway by calling or emailing one of the officers.
No meetings for July or August. If you have a topic you’d like to hear in the fall, let Nancy Gunderson know!!

IEEE Elections

Nick Pasquerilla
It is very important to vote in the annual IEEE election this year. IEEE USA is wanting to make constitutional changes to remove some items that make it difficult to do business. 20% of all members must vote and 2/3 of those voting must vote for this change to modify the constitution. Additionally, those elected into office in this election will be in office until the year 2000. Ballots will probably be sent out in August and be due by October. Your support is appreciated!

IEEE-USA Technology Policy Council

Nick Pasquerilla
The Technology Policy Council has the following mission: The committees of the Technology Policy Council present information and the views of the IEEE-USA to the public, Congress, and the executive branch on various technology issues. The committees are organized into numerous subcommittees and ad hoc task groups consisting of over 200 volunteers who do the work of the council.
Focus Issues: The TPC has the following committees:
