As most of you know, last month the January newsletter was re-sent, incorrectly. Because of this mishap, I am reprinting the February newsletter in part for this month:
Congratulations to all of our participants at the January student paper contest. We had four Clemson University students in this year's competition. I was very impressed with all of the presentations. Our winners list:
1. Jennifer Vanderhorst
2. Ed McDonough
3. Mike Lockhart
The presentations were well thought out and gave the judges very little to judge against. At least three of this year's participants have said they are planning to attend the state competition in Columbia. This competition will probably be in late March or early April.
Based on the previous attendance at the meetings in Clemson, we are going to have the meetings for March and March in Clemson as an experiment. I realize this section covers a fairly large geographical area, making it difficult to have a central location for our meetings. I hope this decision doesn't cause anyone to miss a meeting. If there are serious problems making it to Clemson by 7:00pm, please let me know. Also note, the actual meeting doesn't start until after 7:30pm.
I have finally updated the section web page. Find it at the address at the top of the newsletter. The version of the newsletter on the web will always be the most current and accurate (Instant publishing ).

This month's speaker will be Dan Gage from Datastream in Greenville. Dan has been working in the software industry for 8 years primarily in the PC, Client/Server market. Dan is the project manager for Datastream's E-Commerce initiative. He will discuss this project which involves using a Win32 client (written in Delphi - Object Pascal) with the MS Internet Explorer browser component embedded in it talking across the internet to a middle-ware broker server. This server utilizes MS Internet Information Server to access COM components (written in VC++) running inside Microsoft Transaction Server. Data is encapsulated in a XML messaging structure.
This meeting will be held at the Ramada Inn on Hwy 123 in Clemson on Thursday, March 18, 1999. Dinner will be served:
6:30-7:00 Social 1/2 Hour
7:00-7:30 Dinner
7:30-9:00 Presentation
The cost will be $10.00 for members and guests and $5.00 for students. For reservations please contact one of the officers by Tuesday, March 16, 1999. Reservations are not absolutely necessary, and dinner is optional.

Everyone mark your calendars! The Piedmont Section of IEEE is sponsoring its second annual student social on Saturday April 24, 1999. Perennial powers Clemson and Georgia Tech will do battle in baseball at 7:00pm at Tiger Field in Clemson. Prior to the game the Piedmont Section will host a tail gate party for the students to come out and meet members of the Piedmont Section of IEEE in a social setting. We will have hamburgers, cokes and chips. More details will follow in the April newsletter.
