A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Mark Stokes

This month I would like to introduce you to a couple more services provided by the IEEE. The web has definitely made many things easier for the IEEE. There is now a web page that allows members to change all of their personal information. Browse to: http://services1.ieee.org/membersvc/coa/intro.htm. Many members over the years have asked me to update their information in the mailing list database; however, I cannot make those changes any further than my local copy of the database. This service allows you to change your information. The info will eventually trickle down to me through the monthly updates I receive.

The other service I would like to point out is the email alias service. A couple of years ago the IEEE setup a pilot service allowing only IEEE executive members the ability to have an alias for their email. An email alias is an email address that forwards your email to another email account. Email aliases usually do not change, regardless of where you actually receive your email. You have probably noticed the "@ieee.org" domain at the end of some of the officers' email addresses. These are email aliases given to us by the IEEE. In the last year or so, the IEEE has made this email alias service free to all IEEE members. All it requires is a quick visit to http://eleccomm.ieee.orgl to register a couple of names. The IEEE decides on which one is not in use and most accurately describes you, and it issues the alias to you. Then all you have to do is keep the alias updated to whatever your current email address is and the IEEE forwards all your email to that address.

This probably sounds confusing. Here is my example. I used to have my Internet connection with Carolina Online. My email address was kelsey@carol.net. I currently have my Internet service with Mindspring. That means my email address is kelsey@mindspring.com. For the last three years I have told people to use m.stokes@ieee.org. When I changed services, all I had to do was go to the IEEE web page and change my email address there and I automatically started getting my mail at the Mindspring account.

Another very important advantage to the alias system is the use of anti-virus software at IEEE. Each email message sent through the alias service is automatically scanned through the IEEE's anti-virus system. If a virus is found, the message is returned to the sender with a warning message. The message is forwarded to the intended recipient with the infection removed. I contacted the IEEE postmaster in regards to this system and I received this message:

"From 3/14/199 to 5/4/99 our virus scanning software has prevented the transmission of 1639 infected messages. None of the messages scanned were infected with the Melissa Virus. The software currently used by IEEE is called InterScan by Trend Micro, Inc. For more information you can visit Trend Micro's website at http://www.antivirus.com." That's quite a lot of viruses (about 32 viruses a day).

I encourage each member to take advantage of this alias service. Be sure also to change your membership information to reflect the new aliased address.

Meeting Schedule Change!!

Mark Stokes

[I am reprinting this just in case anyone missed it]

Since you are all engineers, I know you'll like the challenge and experience of trying something new. The Ramada has decided to change the way their meeting rooms are being managed. Instead of making food enough for twenty, they have decided to have the restaurant attached (brand new) make meals on an individual basis. This is good news for the section since this means the section doesn't have to buy meals for people who don't eat them. However, this means that we can't eat during the meeting.

We will meet at 6:30 in the restaurant section (they will have a room there for us to eat together). After ordering and eating, we will all go to the meeting room for our program at 7:30. The meeting itself will still be no charge for those who would rather eat somewhere else. If you have any questions or comments, please be sure to attend this month's meeting. There will be a discussion of our options. If you are unable to attend the meeting and still have questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me and I will do my best to answer and represent your views to the decision making process. If you have your comments in before the meeting on Thursday, I can print them and voice them before the group.

Next Meeting

May 20, 1999

Speech Recognition

Steven Bobo

This month's speaker will be Dr. John Gowdy from Clemson University. Dr. Gowdy is the head of the Computer and Electrical Engineering Department at Clemson. He will speak on his research with speech recognition.

This meeting will be held at the Ramada Inn located at the Intersection of Hy123 and Hy76 in Clemson on Thursday, May 20, 1999. We will meet in the restaurant for dinner and then adjourn to the meeting room for our meeting and speaker:

6:30-7:30 Social and Dinner
7:30-9:00 Presentation

The section will pick up the meeting room fee. Each member is responsible only for his or her dinner. For reservations please contact one of the officers by Tuesday, May 18, 1999.

From the Editor

Mark Stokes

This is the last newsletter that will be published until later this summer. Steven Bobo has scheduled our plant tour for sometime in late summer. There will be a special newsletter/announcement for this tour.

In continuing my discussion on the majordomo lists, I have placed a request for a list to be setup as a discussion list for our section. This means, anyone who wants to discuss something with the members may do so. I may also setup a list for inclusion of the newsletter and important announcements only. This second list would allow only reading (no postings from members). That way if you don't want to hear the ranting and ravings of the members you don't have to. For now, I will use the same method as I have in the past for delivering this newsletter.

ICC Spring Meeting

The IEEE Insulated Conductor Committee (ICC) of PES will hold its 99 Spring meeting May 23-26, 1999 at the Hilton Hotel & Towers in Charlotte, NC. We invite all IEEE members to joint us. The meetings are the best way to keep up with most recent developments in power engineering transmission and distribution technology and application. It is also a good place to networking. For graduating student members, you may meet someone there who would find you a perfect job. To encourage student members to attend the meeting, ICC has waived the registration fee for IEEE student members. Please check out the ICC web site http://www.ewh.ieee.org/soc/pes/icc/ for more information. Or send me an email at y.wen@ieee.org
