Greenville Zoo

Nick Pasquerilla

Our October Piedmont Section meeting will be at the Greenville Zoo. This is our annual non-technical meeting targeted for spouses/significant others, as well as members. Lee Sims, Director of the Zoo, will cover different aspects of the Zoo including Zoo specifics, memberships, latest developments, construction projects currently underway and future plans. He will also have handouts and discuss "Boo in the Zoo", which is a Halloween theme October 19-22, currently in it's 17th year.

The meeting is Thursday October 10, 2002 (early this month). Food will be provided to those who attend free of cost. There is limited space for this meeting so you must make reservations with with Nick Pasquerilla via email: n.pasquerilla@ieee.org or via phone 886-1771 (leave a message if he’s not available)  by Wednesday October 9. The Zoo is closed at this time, but children are OK to bring. We need to meet Lee at the Zoo gate between 6:30 and 7pm. Call 313-3313 if you arrive after 7pm. Directions to the Zoo are at their web site: http://www.greenvillezoo.com/Webdirections.htm

Agenda:

IEEE Members Needed For Radio Program On Engineering Wonders

IEEE-USA Today

"VOICES OF INNOVATION", two-minute spots featuring engineers talking about their innovations, careers and work, are now being aired on local public and commercial radio stations. If you have an idea that could help improve the public's understanding and awareness of engineering, your story could join this exciting new program. To listen to the spots currently being aired and to participate in the American Association of Engineering Societies-sponsored project, go to http://www.voicesofinnovation.org.

IEEE-Usa Calls On U.S. Ieee Members To Engage Lawmakers On Unemployment

IEEE-USA Today

In response to rising engineering unemployment, IEEE-USA is calling on U.S. IEEE members to write their U.S. Representatives and Senators in order to educate them on how unemployment affects engineers, and to urge lawmakers to take action.

Go to the Legislative Action Center and make your voice heard at http://capwiz.com/ieeeusa/issues/alert/?alertid=435666&type=CO.

IEEE-Usa President's Column: Helping The Unemployed Member

IEEE-USA Today

LeEarl A. Bryant outlines various IEEE-USA initiatives aimed at lowering engineering unemployment, including a one-stop website for addressing all of the organization's employment resources.

IEEE Alias Virus Alert News

The SCOOP

Recently a number of IEEE volunteers on various IEEE aliases received one or more virus alerts from the IEEE server. These messages indicate the IEEE's anti-virus protection program is working. They are not a result of a worm/virus originating from the IEEE.

These recent virus-alert messages are most likely a result of the KLEZ worm/virus that is commonly found throughout the Internet. The worm/virus steals the email address book of an infected computer and sends infected dummy messages to names in the stolen address book. The IEEE email server detects and deletes the virus, and sends an alert message to both the recipients and the sender. The recipients see both the original message without the infected portion (e.g. usually an infected attachment) and the virus-alert message. The worm/virus is pervasive, and the virus scanning service provide by IEEE is preventing it from spreading throughout the IEEE community.

For additional information, contact Gilberto Santiago, Email & Security Services, g.santiago@ieee.org. Don’t have an alias setup yet? Go here to get one: http://eleccomm.ieee.org (they’re free w/ your membership)

Convenience For Conference Searchers

The SCOOP

A new Conference Search function has been launched that enables a visitor to go right to the appropriate "shop" page if he wants to purchase a publication associated with his conference (if a publication exists). Start your search at http://www.ieee.org/conferencesearch.

The easiest way to find a conference is to select a "Year" and a "Sponsor," then click on "Submit." Select the conference from the search results, and then scroll down to the "Proceedings/Publications" cell. If there is a publication for that conference, you will see a number. Click on it, and you will be directed to the "shop" page. For further information, contact Patricia Thompson, IEEE Technical Activities, telephone +1 732 562 3872; p.thompson@ieee.org.

2001 IEEE ANNUAL REPORT

The SCOOP

The 2001 IEEE Annual Report is now available. To conserve costs and achieve a broad, global distribution, the report will be primarily accessible online from the IEEE home page, http://www.ieee.org. Search for "Annual Report 2001".

South Carolina Council Web Site

Lee Stogner

The South Carolina Council of the IEEE has been working to create a web site that will support the professional and career needs of electrical engineers based in our state. The new web site contains important IEEE links, real time news feeds and a wealth of other links that will connect the engineer with technology and job related resources. The South Carolina Council of the IEEE invites all electrical engineers in the state to use this important resource and make it their start page each morning. The page can be found at, http://ewh.ieee.org/r3/south_carolina_council/.

Give it a try and let them know what you think.
