This year I have been watching the membership of the Piedmont Section decline month by month. This is one IEEE-wide trend that we do not need to follow. There are many members that let their membership lapse. There are prospective members who are always meaning to join the IEEE, but do not do get around to it. If you are keeping your own IEEE membership current, then you already know all the worthwhile reasons for being a member of this professional organization. You are already a good representative of the Institute. So, when the subject of IEEE comes up in discussions with your colleagues, remind the other engineers of the benefits of belonging to this organization. Mention a recent meeting you've attended (these are always good, and open to all), a publication that you're receiving, a seminar that you're planning to attend, or the excellent rates on insurance that you can receive through the IEEE. Word of mouth does wonders, and you are its carriers. A positive word here and an encouraging comment there will go a long way in reversing the membership trend, and will make us all winners.
Membership applications are available at the section meetings, or you may request them by phone.
Upcoming Events
- November 16: Design Experiments Course. See article below.
- November 21: Plant tour of MEMC Microelectronics in Spartanburg will be conducted by Mr. Dunk Hale. MEMC manufactures Silicon Wafers for the semiconductor industry. The 1997 officer elections will be held before the tour.
- December: Christmas Banquet. Details to follow.
- January: Student Paper Contest in Clemson.
WIN A FREE DINNER ... ON US!
The Piedmont Section is having a contest to promote the attendance of the meetings, the reading of the newsletter, the browsing of its web site, and general electrical engineering knowledge!
To Play:
Search the Piedmont Section web site (http://www.carol.net/ieee) for a hidden technical question. Attend the meeting on October 17. Submit your answer on the entry form supplied at the meeting. A drawing for one winner will take place at the end of the business part of the meeting. The winner must have submitted the correct answer (to three significant figures).
The Prize:
Your cost for the meeting will be refunded to you on the spot!
Restrictions:
Only IEEE Members are eligible. Officers and standing committee chairmen may not participate (they are well fed and they attend all the meetings anyway!).
1997 Officer Nominations
The Piedmont Section will be holding officer elections for 1997 prior to the plant tour on November 21. Presently, the nominees are Mark Stokes (newsletter editor), for the 1997 Treasurer office, Bob Richardson (Treasurer) for the 1997 Secretary office, Nancy Gunderson (Secretary) for the 1997 Vice-Chair office, and Glenn Bischof (Vice-Chairman) for the 1997 Chairman office. The deadline for the nominations is October 29, 1996.
Publications Table: Salary and Benefits Survey
A "Publications Table" is set up at every Section meeting. Various publications of the IEEE are displayed on this table. the 1995 Salary and Benefits Survey, published by the IEEE will be the latest addition to the collection and will be available at the October meeting.
Please take the time to sample the publications at the next meeting. If you belong to a particular IEEE Society, you are encouraged to bring in a sample of that society's magazines for display that evening.
SC Council Awards
Nominations for the 1996 SC Council of the IEEE Awards are being requested. Three awards have been established to honor the contribution of South Carolina engineers and industry:
- Lanthrop Award to honor an outstanding electrical engineering educator
- Smith Award to honor an outstanding member of the electrical engineering profession
- Biedenbach Award to honor a South Carolina industry that has made outstanding contributions to the electrical engineering profession, and to the citizens of South Carolina
The deadline for award nominations is November 1st, 1996. Awards will be presented in February 1997 at the Joint Engineering Council Banquet in Columbia, SC. Please contact one of the officers for more information.
Experiment Design Course
The Piedmont Section of the IEEE will be offering a course in Experiment Design in Greenville, SC, on Saturday, November 16, 1996. This full-day course will be taught by Dr. William Mawby of Michelin North America. Dr. Mawby is the manager of the statistical and mathematical group of Michelin. He has taught designed experiments extensively and has participated in over fifty major industrial experiments.
A brief course outline is as follows:
- The Reasons for Designed Experiments
- How to study multiple factors without confusion
- How to analyze the results for information
- How to diagnose and fix problems
- A step-by-step approach to running a designed experiment
- Helpful hints, additional topics, and discussion of user-supplied data
The course will be held at the Colonial Inn, 755 Wade Hampton Boulevard, Greenville, SC, from 8:30AM until 5:00PM. Lunch, snacks, and refreshments will be provided. The course is OPEN TO ALL. The cost of the course is $50 for IEEE members and $60 for non-IEEE members. For more information, or to receive a course brochure, please call one of the officers, refer to the Piedmont Section Web page, or send e-mail to a.chebli@ieee.org. To register send name, address, telephone number, e-mail address, and check for the correct amount to the Piedmont Section of the IEEE, 205 Keithwood Drive, Anderson, SC 29621. The deadline for registration is November 1, 1996.
If you are planning to attend, please register now. As members of the Piedmont Section, please help promote this course among your colleagues, and within your company. The success of this course will allow us to bring you other similar courses in the future. Your help is appreciated.
