A PUBLICATION OF THE PIEDMONT SECTION OF THE IEEE

The IEEE Piedmont Section will conduct the annual election of officers as part of the
November meeting. Since I had no idea what the officers did before I became one, I can
only conclude that most of the membership is also in the dark. The Leadership Development
Training Manual given to every officer contains long, detailed descriptions of the
responsibilities of each volunteer position. This newsletter only has room for the essence
of each of the four elected positions.
Traditionally in the Piedmont Section, one new officer is nominated each year to the
treasurer position. The treasurer collects the money for the meals at monthly meetings and
pays the bills for the room, meals, newsletter printing and postage, and any other
expenses incurred in keeping the section going. The treasurer transfers funds between the
section's accounts and fills out a financial report at the end of the year. The treasurer
also reports the financial status of the section to other officers.
The treasurer is usually elected the to the secretary position the next year. The
secretary records the minutes of business meetings, reports subject matter and attendance
of meetings to IEEE headquarters, reports changes of officers to headquarters, and keeps
the records of the section safe. Most of the activities of the treasurer and secretary are
handled through forms. Both of these positions may be held by the same person.
The vice chair is responsible for coordinating speakers for monthly meetings and events
such as plant tours. The vice chair disperses information about section events, usually
through the newsletter. The vice chair represents the section at SoutheastCon. The vice
chair position usually is held by the person who had the secretary position the previous
year. The vice chair is traditionally elected to the chair position the following year.
The chair presides at meetings, recommends committee members, arranges for training of
officers, and prepares an annual report of section activities. The chair also writes an
article for the newsletter every month.
If you were paying attention, you should have noticed that being an officer in the
Piedmont Section sets you up for 4 years of participation in the activities of the
section. Actually, it's five years. The past chair is expected to assist the new section
chair.
I recommend active participation in section activities to all members. The best way to do
so is to become an officer. It can be a little time consuming at times, but then, so is
any worth while activity.

Plant Tour to E.E.E.A.
Mark Stokes
This months meeting will be held at Electronic Electro-Mechanical Equipment
Assembly, Inc., in Mauldin. EEEA, a manufacturer of printed circuit boards and electronic
assemblies for more than 23 years, has offered to host a plant tour for our section. They
have been a regular supplier to my company for many years. Just recently EEEA has
purchased a surface mounting placement machine and built the facilities to house it. They
are also filling an apparent gap in the assembly market stuffing and testing finished
circuit boards. The tour will be of their entire facility and should prove informative and
fun.
