Well, I hope everyone has had a nice summer and all of your summer vacation plans went well. I am late in writing this newsletter because things have gotten pretty hectic here lately. This month there are a couple of items I wanted to briefly mention.
First of all, I want to make a call for candidates for receipt of the last 1999 IEEE awards available. Please check out the awards web page and nominate someone you know. We are especially looking for nominations for Outstanding Engineer, Outstanding Service, and Outstanding Engineering Educator. Award criteria are available on the IEEE web site. http://www.ieee.org/about/awards/. These nominations can be made by anyone for any active IEEE member. A board reviews nominations and decisions are based on the nominees' qualifications.
I have recently had the privilege to need the use of IEEE Global Travel Services to book airfare for Sections Congress '99. I'm not sure how long this has been around, but I found it to be very helpful. They offer travel arrangements for all IEEE members for both personal and professional travel needs usually finding the lowest fares around. Check out their services at: http://www.ieeetravelonline.org/ and their "about" page: http://www.ieeetravelonline.org/whatwedo . The service can also be utilized by calling: 1 800 TRY-IEEE (879-4333).
Lastly, and I think most importantly, I would like to make a call for officers for our section. Over the last couple of years, the Piedmont section has been loosing one after the other officers to job changes, etc. These changes have left a very large vacancy in the executive committee. For those who don't know, the Executive committee is composed of those few volunteers that give of their time freely to maintain the section. Such officers are voted on each year around October-November. Currently we have openings in the Treasurer and Secretary positions and I urge you nominate a section IEEE member that you think would serve us well. In addition to your responsibilities as officer, you will get to attend Ex-Con meetings, attend regional meetings, and network with other IEEE members from around the world. The time commitment required for these positions is easily less than 8 hours a month. All of these activities will allow you to help shape the IEEE and the Piedmont section into the new millennium. If you have a nomination please contact one of the current officers (self-nominations are allowed and encouraged). If any more information on these positions is needed, please don't hesitate to contact another officer or myself.

Plant Tour at Schlumberger
Nick Pasquerilla
Centron is an electronic replacement for electro-mechanical residential meters. It gives superior performance to electro-mechanical meters, especially at low power levels. Additionally, it has a RF option that allows remote metering. This is projected to be a high volume, mass produced device. Projected sales volumes are 300,000 units by this years end and possibly 1,000,000 per year in future years.
So that we may give Schlumberger a head count, please let us know if you are coming. Contact one of the officers listed in this newsletter by Tuesday 9/21/99. You may e-mail directly to n.pasquerilla@ieee.org.
The plant is located on Highway 11 in West Union SC near Seneca. From route 123 in Clemson, proceed on route 123 by-pass through Seneca. Take route 28 toward Walhalla, then route 11 toward West Union. The plant will be on the left, 313 North Highway 11. The phone number there is 864-638-3601.

["How has the IEEE helped you?"]
I have been able to catch on to new trends like data acquisition and programming changes via the IEEE Spectrum magazine. Those trends have been very important in understanding both the opportunities and the limitations of new technology. Another way that the IEEE helps me is the monthly book review in IEEE Spectrum magazine. Those books are typically great to read, interesting, and helpful in getting a deeper understanding of those things that EE's have in common, science, business, and helping others. I will often order the book of the month and I can't remember ever being disappointed when it arrived.
[This is from an email I received from Chris about how the IEEE membership has helped him. If you have a story about the IEEE or feelings about how IEEE membership benefits you, please email me and I'll include it for all to enjoy. Who knows, others might not have found the same benefits of membership as you.]
Use this space to reach over 400 IEEE members in the Piedmont section.
