Wind Energy 101: Introduction to Wind Turbine Technology

Presented by: Cy Harbourt
Senior Design Engineer
GE Energy, Salem, VA

Download Power Point Presentation
(you will need MS Powerpoint to view it)

Abstract:
GE has been investing in renewable energy sources including wind since 2002. Many engineers working in the Salem GE facility have been involved in the development and deployment of GE wind turbines from that time. Much work has been done by the Salem GE team on power electronics development for wind, wind turbine controls and wind farm grid integration in the past 8 years. The results of that work will be discussed, including the following:

  • GE Energy and wind power – where are we
  • Wind power for the future
  • What goes into a wind turbine?
  • How do you extract power from wind on a utility scale and some of the issues
  • The growth of the wind power industry,
  • Opportunities for offshore wind power

Biography:
Cy Harbourt received his BSEE from the University of Missouri in 1977 and his MSEE from Syracuse University in 1979. He has worked for GE for (almost) 30 years on many different power electronics designs including:

40KVA VSCF systems utilizing cycloconverter power conversion
EV2000 induction motor drives for electric vehicle
GTO based battery energy storage systems
Cycloconverter based main drives for steel mills
IGCT based 3 level NPC main drives for steel mills
IGBT based power converters for wind turbines

His latest role is system engineer for a high power compressor drive working with engineers from other GE locations in Shanghai and Munich.

The Virginia Mountain Section (VMS) of the IEEE has been serving members in the Southwest corner of the Commonwealth of Virginia since 1949.

We currently have two Student Chapters in local universities and colleges:

  • Virginia Military Institute
  • Virginia Tech

and the VMS Consultants Network Affinity Group

The purpose of this Affinity Group is to share information concerning consulting opportunities, and to make a list of consultants and their areas of expertise available to potential employers.

Anyone wishing to be added to this group, or desiring more information should contact David Livingston, d.livingston@ieee.org.
