A Report on the Design and Performance of Robot Entries to the
2011 Region 3 Student Hardware Contest

Presented by Members of the Virginia Tech and Virginia Military Institute
Robot Teams

Abstract
Every year IEEE Region 3 holds the Region 3 Student Conference in conjunction with SoutheastCon and the Region 3 Executive Committee meetings. One of the highlights of the student conference is the hardware contest, which is typically a robotics challenge.

This year the challenge consisted of a search and rescue mission, where robots had to autonomously search for "victims" of a disaster and identify their state of being: alive, dead, unconscious, etc. The victims were represented by plastic cylinders with blinking LEDs. The disaster area consisted of the floor-plan of a house with rooms and obstacles. Once a victim was identified, the robot had to verbally announce the condition of the victim represented by the LED. Points were granted for properly locating victims and also for locating a hazard represented by a magnetic field.

The Virginia Tech and Virginia Military Institute teams will present their robot designs, strategies, and the performance of their robots at the contest.
