Tour of Salem Electric Department
Presented by: Mr. A.K. Briele III, Director of Salem Electric Department

Abstract

While many electric power customers are serviced by large investor-owned utilities like AEP and Dominion, many customers are also serviced by local power cooperatives and also by electric departments of various municipalities. This presentation will showcase the engineering challenges of providing power to the residents of a municipality, the City of Salem. A brief outline of the meeting follows.

Biography

A.K. graduated from Virginia Tech in 1981 with a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering Technology. Upon graduation, he went to work for TVA at Phipps Bend and later Watts Bar Nuclear power plants. He came to work for the City of Salem at the end of 1982 as an Electrical Engineer and has been here since. With the retirement of Doug Smith at the end of 2001, A.K. was named Director of the Electric Department. A.K. is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Virginia.

Directions to Salem Electric Department:
From I-81, take exit 137 (first Salem exit if traveling north, third and last Salem exit traveling south)

Turn right onto Wildwood Rd (VA 112) at the end of the exit, travel 0.4 miles

Turn left at stoplight (near Hardees) onto US-460 East/US-11 North/West Main Street, travel 1.4 miles

730 W. Main Street is at the intersection of W 4th Street and Main Street, across 4th Street from the new Lowes and across Main St from Lake Spring Park. Parking is available in the front parking lot. Please arrive between 6:30 and 7 PM.

The Virginia Mountain Section (VMS) of the IEEE has been serving members in the Southwest corner of the Commonwealth of Virginia since 1949.

We currently have two Student Branches in local universities and colleges:

and the VMS Consultants Network Affinity Group

The purpose of this Affinity Group is to share information concerning consulting opportunities, and to make a list of consultants and their areas of expertise available to potential employers.
