The Broad Impacts of Cloud Computing

Steven Swenson
Senior Developer
Rackspace Hosting
Blacksburg Virginia

Cloud computing and hosted services has brought the commoditization of infrastructure and products to everyone. As a result, the methodologies used in cloud computing have spread beyond the data center. In this talk I will give an overview of the transformation cloud computing has brought on the business and technical worlds. I will give a demo on how to use a simple control panel and command-line utilities to create servers, database, and networks and discuss how these processes can be automated. I will then discuss how these tools have spurred changes first in the technical world (Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery) and the business world (Fail Fast, Fail Often). I hope to give the attendees enough information so they can start asking important questions regarding how these changes will impact their projects and their industry.

Steven Swenson is a senior developer with Rackspace Hosting in Blacksburg Virginia. His team handles building scalable services in .NET, and supporting continuous delivery and automation for the CloudOffice division using Chef, Powershell, and OpenStack. He is a graduate of Radford University with a BS in Computer Science.
