Overview

As of January 1, 2008, the IEEE Engineering Management Society will become the IEEE Technology Management Council (TMC). This change affects current Engineering Management Society members and our local Society Chapter. This page is a brief summary of the changes for the Southeastern Michigan Chapter.

IEEE councils do not have members the way that IEEE societies have members. Therefore, you will no longer be a member of the Engineering Management Society. You will become a Council Supporter and TMC Chapter Member if you continue to purchase the Engineering Management publications. In addition, all members of the societies that belong to the council will be TMC Chapter members (see the list of member socieites below).

If you have any questions about your local chapter membership, please contact us at semichigan-ems@ieee.org.

Frequently Asked Questions About Transitioning the IEEE Engineering Management Society to the IEEE Technology Management Council

  1. Why did the Board of Governors of the Engineering Management Society choose to transition from a Society to the Technology Management Council?
  2. The requirements for managing today not only involve the manager but also the people being managed. There is a need to provide services and support to a larger variety of professionals with a greater spectrum of interests beyond what a single Society can deliver. A Council through its Member Societies will deliver these activities more effectively and in an integrated environment.

  3. What are the differences between a society and a technical council?
  4. In all respects, except for membership, a technical council operates like a society. Both a society and a council publish journals, organize conferences, possess governing boards and chapters, and through their Fellows Committee review Fellow nominations. Society and Council Presidents serve on the IEEE Technical Activities Board with equal rights.

Whereas a society has individuals as members, a technical council has societies as members. The Member Societies work together in the Council reflecting a multi-disciplinary technical area of mutual interest, providing publications and conferences.

  5. Which IEEE Societies have joined the Council?
  6. The following Societies have joined the Council as Sustaining Society Members:

    1. Aerospace & Electronic Systems
    2. Broadcast Technology Society
    3. Circuits & Systems Society
    4. Communications Society
    5. Computer Society
    6. Electron Devices Society
    7. Industrial Electronics Society
    8. Lasers and Electro-Optics Society
    9. Professional Communications Society
    10. Reliability Society
    11. Signal Processing Society
    12. Solid State Circuits Society
    13. Systems Man and Cybernetics Society
    14. Vehicular Technology Society

  7. What are the benefits to me as an EMS Member when EMS transitions to a Council?
  8. The Council will continue to provide the same benefits you currently receive as an EMS member. In addition, the Council will offer cross disciplinary opportunities for publications, conferences, and educational venues.

  9. How will my status as an EMS Member change when EMS transitions to a Council?
  10. With the transition to a Council, the Society will no longer exist and you will no longer be an EMS Member. You will now automatically become a Council Supporter. If your section has an EMS Chapter that Chapter will now automatically become a TMC Chapter and you will now also become a TMC Chapter Member.

  11. As a 2007 EMS Member I am paying $30.00 for membership in EMS. What will I pay in 2008 when I become a Council Supporter?
  12. As a Council Supporter or as a Council Chapter Member, you will receive the same publications and benefits in 2008 by paying the same $30.00 fee.

  13. What will happen to my EMS publications when EMS becomes a Council?
  14. The Council will continue to provide you with the same publications you currently receive as an EMS member.

  15. What will happen to the EMS conferences when EMS becomes a Council?
  16. The Council will continue to provide you with the same conference opportunities that you currently receive as an EMS member.

  17. What happens to my local EMS Society Chapter when EMS becomes a Council?
  18. With the transition to a Council, your Section EMS Chapter will become a Section Technology Management Council Chapter.

  19. How will recommendations for Fellow and current EMS awards be addressed by the Council?
  20. The Council will continue the same nominating process for IEEE Fellow and Engineering Management Awards as currently done by EMS.

  21. When will EMS become a Council?
  22. The IEEE Technology Management Council will begin operations on 1 January 2008.

Activities

As written in a letter to members by Tariq S. Durrani, 2007 EMS President:

The Technology Management Council will continue all current EMS activities. The Council will further advance the profession of engineering, technology, and innovation management, and working with the twelve Council Member Societies enhance the careers of IEEE members and individuals in the profession. The Council will continue to concentrate attention on the global audience of practitioners and researchers through its publications, conferences, educational products, and its relationships with other organizations.
