Interested in Reviewing for the FE or PE Examinations?

In Winter 2002 the Section purchased two sets of video tapes for the Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (15 lessons 3 hours each, on 45 tapes).  These were used in the course that Dr. Ron Fredricks ran at the Rapistan "Red School House" in preparation for the April FE examination.  The tapes are now available for check out by West Michigan Section members (including Student members). Please contact Ron at 616-791-9134 (evenings) or E-mail him at ronfredricks3@comcast.net
The Section Executive Committee also approved the purchase of 6 (six) review booksets (4 books in each set) for the P.E. examination. Material for the new Computer Engineering option is included in the booksets. Sets cost over $200 each and were purchased by the Section to help our members advance professionally. Two booksets are currently checked out by Section members for this April's examination but there are four sets still left for WMSIEEE members to borrow,  Checkout is similar to a library book. (Due May 1st.)  One set is still with Ron (in GR (see above) the other three are with Dr. Hossein Mousavinezhad at WMU (h.mousavinezhad@wmich.edu 269-387-8278 offfice).
Lindeburg's text is used for the FE exam prep course. Carrarra's text and three associated study guides and sample question books are used for the PE course.  Only the tapes are available for checkout for the FE exam so you will have to order the Lindburg text yourself.  Carrarra's main text is hardcover, contains 70 chapters plus appendices, and is excellently written.  It belongs on every practicing E.E.s shelf as it covers the entire gamut of Electrical Engineering.  Both can be examined on line at the Professional Publications Website WWW.ppi2pass.com. --Ron Fredricks

Recent Activities

On Thursday, January 29th, the West Michigan Section of the IEEE and it's affinity organization, the West Michigan Consultants Network (WMCN), held a joint meeting at Smiths Aerospace in Grand Rapids . The featured speaker was Dr. Carl Erickson, President of Atomic Object, and former associate professor of Computer Science at Grand Valley State University. The featured topic was Extreme Programming. XP is a set of software development strategies and practices that help cut time to market and improves product quality. Dr. Erickson's company is successfully utilizing XP to develop software, and his presentation clearly generated interest in the topic among many of those who attended. The meeting was very well attended by Section and Consultants Network Section members and their guests with 19 showing up for dinner beforehand, and 23 at the meeting itself. Carl's presentation was excellent, and there were a significant number of questions for him at the end. The group lingered for almost a half an hour after the meeting talking in smaller groups, and fun was had by all.---Chuck Parks, President, WMCN

It's charter is to help businesses and consultants find each other, and to offer a networking tool for independent consultants and contract engineers to share and learn from each others experiences. If you are interested in joining us, consultant or not, please check out our WEB site for meeting details at West Michigan Consultant's Network website---Chuck Parks, President, WMCN
