As we enter the final quarter of 2007, it is time to reflect on our goals and objectives. At the beginning of the year, I laid out the goals for the Section to -
Improve the value of member services, Promote mid-career education, improve K-12 education, and Resuscitate innovation in engineering.
Central Texas Section members continue to contribute to these goals by promoting our members to higher grades, forming new chapters, leading conferences, and holding section and chapter meetings.
Together, we have conducted several successful conferences, meetings, and workshops, including the Austin Brain Party 2007, IEMC2007, and the Wireless Hive Network Symposium. CTS Section officers attended the annual Region 5 Meeting and the IEEE USA Leadership meeting. We’ve conducted Section Planning meetings in the spring and fall to keep us focused and on track. Finally, we formed two new chapters improving member value.
Our final goals in the last months of the year will be to recognize our leaders who have stepped up to the challenge, conduct a final member upgrade event, and plan some fun social events to showcase our members contributions to engineering.
Of special note, this is the final edition for our Analog Editor, Dr. Dawn Roberson. The Analog is an important communication tool for the Section and Dawn has done an outstanding job during her tenure. It’s a tough act to follow, but if you have an interest in filling this position, please let me know.

If you meet the requirements but never seem to have the time to complete an application, we are planning a final Senior Member Event for 2007 in the Austin area toward the end of November. Senior members who have been through this process will be at the meeting to provide assistance in reviewing your application. We will have computers available to help you to finalize your application if needed. After the event, the Central Texas Section (CTS) will manage that the required references are written by CTS senior members. Light refreshments will be provided.

An upgraded BRAIN for the BEST computers! The CTS Board was approached to donate some money to the San Antonio BEST organizers. As a result of this donation, they have prototyped a new controller platform (now called BEST Robotics Advanced Instruction Node) and is now quite mature. The first example robots were built in the Spring and a prototype competition (May 5th at Auburn University) of the 2007 game was held with 3 of the robots using the prototype controllers. Some changes were made from this event, and improvements added for the first production run. This development was all done by volunteer efforts since last October/November when IEEE and AIAA provided funds for production of the first few printed circuit boards. These new functions will not be used in this Fall's competitions (not everyone got the upgrade), but will be available for experimentation by the student groups.
The cost to the student groups has not changed significantly, which was the intent for the upgraded capability. As IEEE members, we contribute to society in many ways - some this way, and Austin BEST is looking for mentors for the Fall competitions (see Calls for volunteers) - put together a team of mentors, and have fun with the student groups!
New Affinity Group CTS officially now has a Life Members Affinity Group. Scott Atkinson is listed as chair. Please contact him if you need more details about meetings. I heard a rumor that it will be in mid-August. Stay tuned for more details!
San Antonio Engineering Management Society Chapter We are in the process of collecting the needed signatures on a petition to form a San Antonio EMS Chapter (which will become a San Antonio Technology Management Council on January 1st). Titles Needed for Journal Legacy ProjectThe IEEE Legacy Project is an effort to digitally convert the entire back-file for each IEEE periodical beginning with the first issue. These digital archives will be loaded into IEEE Xplore improving the depth of information available to members and customers. Currently about 50,000 articles have been converted and loaded into IEEE Xplore. There are about 30,000 additional articles in the queue for scanning and digitization. However, there are gaps in the back-file materials. The following list contains all the periodical issues still being sought for this legacy project. On 20 August 2007, a default spam filtering level, expected to reduce the volume of email sent to ieee.org addresses by 30 percent, will be applied to all IEEE email aliases. It is designed to filter out email that is extremely likely to be UCE/spam. In the past, this filtering service had to be individually activated by each user. However, those who do not wish to have the default spam filtering level applied to their IEEE email alias can select to "opt-out" at https://uce.ieee.org and choose the "No UCE/Spam filtering" option, or select a more aggressive filter level. After choosing this option, click on the "Set UCE/Spam Filtering Level" button to save the changes. If no action is taken by 20 August, the default spam filtering level will be activated. IEEE Teams with IBM to Launch TRYENGINEERING.ORGIEEE and IBM have collaborated to launch a new website that combines interactive activities with information on careers in engineering. TryEngineering.org is designed to educate a variety of audiences about the different engineering disciplines and the impact engineers have on society. Targeted toward teachers, school counselors, parents and students, TryEngineering.org lets site visitors explore how to prepare for an engineering career, ask designated experts engineer-related questions and play interactive games. Tools for teachers include lesson plans and engineering projects as well as a list of student competitions and science and engineering-oriented summer camps. The site will be launched on 5 June with a searchable list of accredited engineering programs in the U.S. and Canada, and will be expanded to include programs in other English-speaking countries as well as Germany and France.
