Date: December 7, 2006
Time: 5:00-6:00pm - Seminar
Location: University of Texas at Austin
Topic: The Impact of Single Event Effects on Advanced Digital Technologies
Abstract: Opening with an infamous real-world example where Single Event Effects (SEEs) caused an expensive customer problem for a large corporation, we will review the three primary radiation mechanisms responsible for SEEs in the terrestrial environment and how the transient charge disturbances caused by these events disrupts circuit operation. We will then consider how sensitivity to SEEs is changing with technology scaling, and will finish up with a discussion of the types of solutions process engineers, designers, and architects can use to mitigate this dominant reliability problem.

Topic: Surface Preparation Techniques Used for Advanced Gate Device Structures
Speaker: Joel Barnett, Senior Member of Technical Staff
Speaker Bio: Joel Barnett received his BS degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of California-Berkeley in 1984 and has over 20 years of semiconductor experience. He has authored and co-authored more than 60 journal and conference papers in various semiconductor research areas including metal deposition, cleans, high-k and metal gate processes and statistics. He rejoined SEMATECH in 1999 and is working on the High-k gate team developing pre-gate clean, post-gate etch clean and metal wet etch process solutions in his position as a Senior Member of the Technical Staff. He is currently co-chairing the ItrS Surface Preparation Sub-TWG team.

Topic: Thin Germanium-Carbon Films Grown Directly on Silicon for Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Device Applications
Speaker: David Kelly
Speaker Bio: David Q. Kelly completed his undergraduate studies in 2002 at Brigham Young University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in applied physics with an emphasis in computer science. He completed a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in December 2003 under Professor Sanjay K. Banerjee. His master’s thesis investigated hot-carrier reliability of strain- and bandgap- engineered MOSFETs. His current work in Professor Banerjee’s group involves the fabrication and characterization of metal-oxide-semiconductor devices fabricated on germanium-carbon films grown directly on silicon using chemical vapor deposition. He recently presented a study of mobility enhancement in buried- and surface-channel high-K/metal gate germanium-carbon pMOSFETs at the 2005 International Electron Devices Meeting. Mr. Kelly expects to complete his doctoral studies at the University of Texas at Austin in fall 2006.
