Membership for CTS Members

Society Membership

We encourage you to join any of the many societies available in IEEE at http://www.ieee.org/membership/join/. If you are already a member, please encourage your associates to join societies. IEEE membership provides a variety of benefits to its members ranging from technical publications to conferences to career development assistance to financial services.

"Supersize" your IEEE Membership with an upgrade to Senior Member status

If you have a baccalaureate degree in engineering and seven or more years of professional experience you are eligible to apply for upgrade to Senior Member Grade. Complete information, including requirements can be found online at Senior Member Program.

There are many reasons why you should consider upgrading your membership. Some of the benefits include:

We know that many eligible members never take the time to apply for Senior Membership, either because they think the requirements are too high or they think it would take too much time. We would like to show you that neither of these reasons should be an obstacle.

First of all, the basic requirement for Senior Membership is 10 years in the profession with 5 years of significant performance. Significant performance can include responsibility for, or major contribution to, important scientific or engineering work, publication of engineering or scientific papers, books or inventions, development of courses and related activities. Most engineers with 10 years in the profession will meet these requirements. Details and examples are given on the IEEE web site http://www.ieee.org/web/membership/senior-members/index.html.

Secondly, your application can be done quickly. The IEEE web site has forms for electronic submission of applications and the required references.

And finally, to make the submission as easy as possible, the Central Texas Section holds Senior Member Upgrade Events in Austin and in San Antonio. There will be computers available to review and complete you application at the Event. YOU WILL BE ABLE TO COMPLETE ALL STEPS IN THE APPLICATION PROCESS DURING THE EVENT! Senior and Fellow members who have been through this process will be at the event to provide assistance in reviewing your applications. After the event, the CTS will manage that CTS Senior and Fellow members write the required references. These events will be announced several weeks in advance through the Analog.

To submit your application at the event, you will need:

    1. Electronic copy, in MS Word format, of your application filled out with the following
      • IEEE member number
      • Degrees, schools and dates
      • Current position, company and title
      • List of professional experience
      • List of achievements demonstrating significant performance
    2. Electronic copy of a recent resume (to be submitted with the application)

Examples of the significant performance portion of the application, one from a commercial IEEE member and the other from an academia IEEE member can be found here.

Career Development

IEEE-USA, in concert with AchieveGlobal, is offering online career development courses designed to equip IEEE members with leadership and customer service skills. AchieveGlobal, an international provider of training and consulting services, offers course modules in "Giving and Receiving Constructive Feedback," "Managing Your Priorities," and "Proactive Listening," among others. The courses are approved for continuing education credit and are offered at a discount.

A specialized learning management system allows members to track their progress and course portfolio. For more information and course registration, go to http://salary.ieee.org log in using your IEEE Web Account, click on the Shop tab, and then click on "Career-Development Courses."
