Dear Colleagues, Welcome to the IEEE Women in Engineering Chapter for Central Texas. Our local chapter of WIE became official on August 13, 2002. It was formed to serve the membership through stimulating involvement with IEEE and opportunities for professional development and networking. We invite members from industry and academia as well as from other career ventures that encompass interest in the IEEE. Through networking and local activities, our goal is for the Centex WIE chapter to provide support to assist women in progressing in their careers in the fields of engineering and science. Our plans include outreach activities, providing programs with speakers from a wide range of science and engineering endeavors, and tie-ins to other local groups centered on women in technology. We are affiliated with the Women in Engineering Committee of the International IEEE organization as well as with other WIE chapters across the country. The Central Texas Section of IEEE has enthusiastically supported the initiation of this Women in Engineering chapter and has provided excellent support as the organization has carried out a variety of activities. The WIE Chapter website is at http://ewh.ieee.org/r5/central_texas/wie/. This site is our vehicle to disseminate information on our plans and activities, as well as links to valuable resources. The website also provides information about future meetings and how to join our WIE mailing list. There are many opportunities for members to assume leadership roles in the chapter, including serving as liaison in San Antonio and in other communities in Central Texas. I am thrilled to serve as Chair of this chapter and invite you to become actively involved in future initiatives. Sherry Gillespie |
