Central Texas WIE Meeting Announcement
Date: May 4, 2004
Time: 6:00-8:00pm
Speaker: Chandrajit Bajaj, Center for Computational Visualization, Department of Computer Sciences, Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences, University of Texas at Austin
Location: UT Austin A.C.E.S Building, ACES 2.404a [see directions and parking information below]

Meeting Agenda

  • 6:00 to 6:25 - Meet and greet
  • 6:25 - 6:30 - Brief announcements
  • 6:30 to 7:40 - Speaker (see abstract and bio below)
  • 7:40 to 8:00 - Q&A, Networking

Topic: A Visual Tour from the NanoWorld to the Inter-Galactic Medium (and back)

Abstract -- We shall begin our tour in the three-dimensional world of the nano-machinery of life, such as ion channels, the ribosome, and viruses, and see glimpses of their function. The next stop shall be in exploration of the human body from within. We shall then fly over an oil-field, as well as skim over our earth's majestic oceans, before heading to the stars, galaxies and beyond. The return shall be equally comfortable.

Biography -- Chandrajit Bajaj is a Professor in the Department of Computer Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin. He holds the CAM Chair in Visualization and is Director of the Center for Computational Visualization.

Dr. Bajaj earned his B.Tech. in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology in New Delhi, India, in 1980 and the M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science in 1983 and 1984 respectively from Cornell University

Dr. Bajaj serves on the Editorial Boards for ACM Transactions on Graphics and the International Journal of Computational Geometry and Applications. Dr. Bajaj's research interests include Computer Graphics, Computational Mathematics, Geometric Design, and Scientific Data Visualization. His current research focus includes the following:

  • the design and analysis of data structures and compression algorithms that support multi-resolution approximations of very large geometries and multiple function fields,
  • an integrated parallel framework for domain modeling, simulation, interrogative visualization, and
  • user interfaces for navigation and interrogation.

Dr. Bajaj's web page is at the URL http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/bajaj/

Directions

The ACES building is located at the southeast corner of Speedway and 24th Street. In this map of the east mall area, it is the building marked TAY. Entry into the ACES building is marked in this accessibility map of the east mall area. The Visualization Lab (ACES 2.404a) is located on the ground floor of the building.

On-campus parking is more flexible outside of main business hours. If you arrive on campus after 5:45pm, then many parking spots on campus are available for non-permit parking. Be careful to read signs, however, since some spots are still restricted to some sort of UT permit even outside of the restricted hours. The parking maps information from the University (http://www.utexas.edu/maps/main/parking/) will provide guidance; the information from Parking and Transportation (http://www.utexas.edu/parking/parking/) may also be helpful.

The Speedway Garage and Twenty Seventh Street Garage are located on the south side of 27th Street west of Speedway. They are marked as SWG and TWG in the upper right of this map of the communications area and this parking map of the communications area. As you leave the parking garage, head south along Speedway. The ACES building is at the southeast corner of the intersection of Speedway and 24th Street.

The San Jacinto Garage is located on San Jacinto south of Dean Keeton (formerly known as 26th Street). It is marked as SJG in this map of the law area; as of this writing, it is marked with its former abbreviation (PG1) in this parking map of the law area. If you exit the parking garage on the San Jacinto side (to the west), you will reach the ACES building by walking west along 24th Street. ACES is on the left just before Speedway.
