Title: Smart Antenna Systems; DOA estimation and Beamforming

Presenter: Dr. Nuri Yilmazer

Abstract:

Wireless communication technology and its applications have been rapidly growing and becoming a vital part of our daily life more and more each day. The number of users is increasing, but the available resources are scarce. Spatial domain techniques have risen as a new venue to increase the number of users as well as to increase the estimation accuracy in wireless communication systems. This performance increment can be achieved through antenna arrays which are equipped with signal processing capabilities where the antenna beampattern can be directed in any intended direction.

Smart antenna systems deal with direction of arrival estimation (DOA) and beamforming techniques. Most beamforming techniques assume the prior knowledge of the DOA of the signals coming to the array. Furthermore, performance of the beamforming techniques relies on the accurate estimation of the complex antenna weights which are used to form the radiation pattern of the antenna array. In the presentation, different approaches to determine these antenna weights will be discussed. Additionally, an efficient DOA estimation method will be introduced for real-time applications.

Message From the Vice-Chair:

Dear IEEE Corpus Christi Section Members,

Thank you again for voting in the section and runoff elections. We are currently
lining up speakers for the rest of the year. Due to schedule conflicts a couple
speakers are being moved to Fall dates. This month however, please join us for
what promises to be avery interesting presentation by Dr. Yilmazer.

If you have any ideas for future meetings or would like to volunteer, please let
one of the board members know.  I look forward to seeing you at the meeting.

Lifford McLauchlan
2012 IEEE Corpus Christi Section Vice Chair
