March 2009 Monthly Meeting – HAPPY St. PATRICK’S DAY!!!
Missouri State Highway Patrol – Springfield Crime Lab
This is the Patrol’s second "full service" crime lab in Missouri. Assistant Crime Lab Director Bill Marbaker took everything that works at the Jefferson City lab and added to it a wish list developed over the years to make the second lab an even more ideal space for the needs of the 21 new criminalists and staff members who will help law enforcement officials solve crimes. The Crime Lab is 30,000 square feet on three floors. It includes a firearms lab, latent fingerprints lab, trace evidence lab, extensive DNA work and exam rooms, drug chemistry lab, toxicology lab, a large open work area, and a number of supporting features such as storage rooms, vehicle bay, and conference and break rooms. Some new features include a separate vehicle bay to examine vehicles from crime scenes that will improve upon a garage site used in Jefferson City and large industrial freezer and cooler for evidence storage instead of a line of stand alone commercial and residential-style units in the Jeff City lab.
The laboratory will have isolated work areas for all of the forensic science disciplines. In addition, the lab will have sophisticated air pressure gradients between the different rooms in the DNA lab, with air locks leading into the "clean room". The building will also make extensive use of advanced energy saving chemical fume hoods. Many recirculating hoods and work stations will be used instead of externally ducted hoods where appropriate. These hoods will scrub the air through advanced filters such as HEPA/charcoal or particulate/charcoal filters to minimize the volume of conditioned air being exhausted from the building, thus saving energy. As always, co-workers, family members, and friends are welcome to attend
