Section Chair: Taufik
Taufik began
his college
education in 1989 at Northern Arizona University where he received his B.S. degree
with Cum
Laude
majoring in Electrical Engineering and minor in Computer Science in
1993. He
then continued his study at the University of Illinois Chicago where he received M.S. in Electrical
Engineering and
Computer Science in 1995. He then worked a researcher at the
Microelectronics
Lab at UIC where he was involved with the design of micro-coils for
magnetic
field measurement inside micro-undulator. In 1996 he
decided to pursue
the Doctor
of Engineering degree at Cleveland State University. There he worked as a
teaching assistant for
the
Control Systems Lab and later on as a research assistant for the Power
Electronics lab. In May 1999, he received the Doctor of Engineering
degree in
Electrical Engineering with emphasis in Power Electronics and Power
Systems.
His doctoral dissertation involved the design of parallel ac-ac
converters with
master-slave control.
During
the course of his
study, Taufik has been employed by engineering companies starting with
Capstone
Microturbine Corporation where he spent the summer of 1997 performing
study of
paralleled microturbine generators. In 1998, he was employed by
Rockwell
Automation as a hardware engineer to conduct tests on high-speed
Ethernet
module. He then moved to Picker International (currently Philips
Medical
System) where he helped the design of a power converter for X-ray
generator
used in the CT scanner. His industry experience continued in summer
2001 at San
Diego Gas and Electric where he led a group of senior engineers to
conduct
reliability study of circuit breakers. Since summer 2002, he has been
with Rantec
Power Systems, Inc. where he is involved mainly with the design of
switching
power supply.
In
August 1999, he accepted a
job as an Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering at Cal Poly State University, San Luis Obispo.
.
There, he has been upgrading the Power
Electronics Lab and has redeveloped
power electronic courses and labs. He has also been involved in power
related
projects such as Harmonic Study of Adjustable Speed Drives (ASD) in
Irrigation
Pumps and Photovoltaic Facility at Cal Poly. He has published numerous
technical
papers in power electronics and for his love in teaching, he has
received
awards including Engineering Student Council Outstanding Faculty, IEEE
Cal
Poly’s Outstanding Professor, EE Best Lecturer, and EE Faculty From
Whom Students
Learned The Most.
Walt Whipple was appointed the
member-at-large
for Santa Barbara in 2003 and a Vice Chair in
2004. Walt may be reached via email at w.whipple@ieee.org and by phone
at (805) 967-6004. His cell-phone is (805) 452-7891 although the
AT&T service makes it more a pager than a phone. Walt
is senior past chair of the section, senior past chair of the computer
chapter, 2003 LAC vice chair for advertising, and 2004
LAC Vice Chair (publications).
Walt holds a Ph.D. in Computer, Information and Control
Engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and a B.S.,
Engineering Science, from Harvey Mudd College. He is a registered
professional electrical engineer in California and holds the Program
Management Professional certificate from PMI. He has been
listed in Who's Who in America regional and national editions. He
has been programming computers since 1961 and C++ since 1992. He
taught C/C++ at New York Institute of Technology and organized a
seminar in C/C++/VC++ for the Long Island Section. Walt provides a page for Santa Barbara
activites on his web site, www.members.cox.net/wingineering
Vice Chair Administration & Secretary: Dean Y. Arakaki
David Perry has been working with
computers and information systems since 1949. In the early years, he
contributed to the design of computers, developed interpreters,
computer simulation, , developed requirements for a command and control
system for Military Airlift Command, ran a computer service company.
Most recently he was involved as a consulting programmer in the
development of electronic countermeasures for various avionics
companies.
