Two UCLA IEEE Student Branch Leaders Win Prizes
June, 2009
Two IEEE Student Branch seniors at UCLA have won
prizes granted by
the EE Department in the Henry Samueli School of
Engineering and
Applied Science.
Jonathan Chew, Chair of the IEEE Student Branch, won the
Christina
Huang Memorial Prize of $350 for service to engineering
students at
UCLA.
Jeffrey Akamine, IEEE Student Branch Vice-Chair for
External Affairs,
has won the Outstanding Senior (Bachelor of Science)
Award.
The awards will be presented in private ceremonies and
the winners
will be recognized at the HSSEAS Commencement on June
13.

Computer Science, is
appearing in the March issue of Los Angeles Magazine.
"Feature Shock",
the first featured article in March, recalls the
interesting stories of how
he helped create the Internet forty years ago, as well
as his vision of our
future.

Prof. Kleinrock is an IEEE Life Fellow, and IEEE CLAS is
working with UCLA
to honor the historic event of Internet birth.

National Medal of Science for Prof. Leonard Kleinrock, UCLA
September, 2008
White House announced that Leonard Kleinrock, Distinguished Professor
in UCLA Computer Science Department, will be one of the recipients of
the National Medal of Science. This is the nation’s highest scientific honor
and Prof. Kleinrock will be presented with the medal at a White House
ceremony in September 2008.
Prof. Kleinrock's citation reads: "For fundamental contributions to the
mathematical theory of modern data networks, for the functional
specification of packet switching which is the foundation of the Internet
Technology, for mentoring generations of students and for leading the
commercialization of technologies that have transformed the world."
