WTS2009

April 22-24, 2009

Wireless Telecommunications (WTS) Symposium 2009

We will be posting some selected briefings from WTS 2009, held in Prague, Czech Republic in late April 2009, on our Foothill Section IEEE website. This event was partially sponsored by the Foothill Section IEEE, its Communications Society chapter, and its APS / MTT chapter. Professor Steven Powell from Cal Poly Pomona is one of the principal organizers of this event. He attended and recommended several briefing that would be of interest to our Foothill IEEE members.

The first recommended talk was given by Bernd Haberland of Alcatel / Lucent, who is leading the effort in Long Term Evolution (LTE) integration in that particular group / organization. The title of the talk is, "LTE Technologies Tutorial: Innovations and Candidate Technologies for LTE Advanced" This is directed towards giving a view of the LTE issues in key technologies for the next 4G wireless phone networks. Professor Haberland is aiming his group's efforts towards 60 VOIP ( voice over Internet protocol) channels per Mhz, with higher data rates for both Uplink / Downlink, and both better peak spectrum efficiency and cell edge spectrum efficiency. He describes the technology lead items for both single unit multiple input multiple output (SU / MIMO) and multiple unit multiple input multiple output (MU / MIMO). These include interference cancelling receiver design, three dimensional antenna beamforming for the transmitter, and higher efficiency wideband power amplifier (PA) designs, possibly in class EF. Lastly, he turns to the business model: where, when, and how to get the revenues required to support the 4G networks.
