The following minutes capture the highlights of the Foothill Section Executive Committee (EXCOM) Meeting held at the International House of Pancakes Restaurant (IHOP) in Upland, CA on February 12th, 2004.

I.  Call to Order

The meeting was called to order by the Chair, Bill Holbrook at 6:58 pm.

a. Quorum review    A quorum was present.  The following officers and guests attended the meeting;  Mike Sedlar, Keith Reno, Charles Antoniak, Bill Holbrook, Jea Park, Tom Cylkowski, Art Sutton, and Lyle McCurdy.

b. Approval of minutes (Section Secretary). Mike presented the January 15th minutes, and thanked Art for preparing them.   A motion to accept the minutes as written was approved without discussion.

c. Approval of agenda - any new items or changes?   There were no additions to the agenda.

 II. Section and committee Reports

a. Treasurer's report (Art Sutton).  Art reported that he is planning to go to PFF to start a new account for the section.  It seems to be too hard to add people to the Washington Mutual account.

b. Membership (Chuck Antoniak). Chuck reported that there are not about 1218 members.  He was not sure of the trend.

c. Education (Jea Park).  No report.

d. Student Activities (Lyle McCurdy).   Nothing new to report.

e. IECES (Keith Reno).  Keith reported that the Engineering Week dinner will be 2/25 at the University of Redlands.  Officers are encourages to sign up now.

f. Student-chapter reports or requests, if any  Student Rep(s) present

None—no student leaders were present.

g. PACE (Chuck Antoniak)

-Mathcounts.  Coming up on 2/28 at Cal Poly Student Union.  Graders etc will be needed.  This corresponds with the Engineering Open House Day at Cal Poly.  Math teachers will also help.

--Future Cities.  Gerald and Chuck were judges at the Science Museum.  “Plasti-city” was the theme with awards for the best use of plastics.    There were no problems with the judging, but it was expensive for parking and lunch.  That were not enough team mentors—these are need in September.  Foothill Section should sponsor/mentor a local school next year.

--Region 6 Report.  Winfred Miles sent out the Region 6 report including 2 Foothill Section Activities—Mathcounts and CLPE, We could take credit for more next year.

h. GOLD activities report  anyone?

No activity since last month.

i. AP/MTT Chapter report (Chuck Antoniak).  Not much to report.  JPL quieter than usual.

j. Circuits & Systems/Electronic Devices Student Chapter report (TariqQayyum).Lyle reported that they met today and had about 35-40 members at the meeting.  They bought a banner.  They are also selling lab kits.

k. Communication Society Chapter Report  (Tom Cylkowski).  Tom reported that the Corporate Telecommunications Seminar (CTSD) was held  Feb 6th at Cal Poly with about 100 attendees.  There were three speakers (SCE, NGC, Hilton).  WTS is next.  There are 58 papers in review.  The fees are $250 for members and $125 for students.  There was some discussion about reducing the fees for students, but no conclusions.

l. Awards Committee report (Keith Reno).  Nothing new to report.

m. Section Webmaster report (Bill Holbrook).  Bill accepted the action to add new WTS materials to the website.

III. Old Business

a.  Boy Scout Day at Cal Poly went well on 2/7.  Mike, Bill, Art, and Lyle worked the day.  There were about 75 boys in Electronics Merit Badge and 24 in Radio.  Next year we could use money from the Section for soldering irons, pliers, etc.  We also recommend using more college students to help next year.

IV. New Business

a.  March 20 CERTS Tour at UCR.  Mike accepted the action to send out invitations via e-mail.  Jea will provide directions.  Jea will also provide donuts for the participants.

b.  March 19-21 IEEE-USA/PACE Meeting at Atlanta, GA.  Bill requested a Foothill Section representative for the meeting.  Region 6 will share expenses. $300 max is provided for the section chair.  There is a 50/50 split for the PACE chair.  No one volunteered at the meeting.  This also conflicts with our tour on March 20.

c.  Request for manpower volunteer support for 2004 California Association for Public Safety Official Training Conference and Exposition—Ontario Convention Center May 11-14.  We got feedback on our website!!  Student helpers are needed and will get free admission.

d.  Section event planning meeting is scheduled for Saturday April 24, 9-12.  Need a location.  Cap Poly or Rockwell Collins.

e.  LAC and R6 support (meetings, voting, etc).  Bill has the action.

f.  Other.  Secretary/Treasurer report is due 2/20.  May need chapter/society reports done.

g.  Next Section EXCOM meeting—per IHOP we need to schedule all in advance to assure availability (Bill Holbrook).  The Group agreed t meet over lunch after the CERTS tours on March 20th.

h.  Other.  Jea reported that mentors are needed for September for the Vinnie Awards.  These awards are named after Leonardo Di Vinci.

i.  Other.  Lyle reported that he saw a presentation on the Parallax Stamp.  They have kits starting a $40 including a robot kit and PID controller kit.  Could be used to hold classes for high school students to “sell” engineering?

V. Adjourn.  The meeting was adjourned by the Chair at 9:30 pm.
