The Mind in Action

FORMAT: 25-90 minute interactive presentation

GROUP SIZE: 15-50; larger groups require customized adjustments

MATERIALS NEEDED: Flip chart or white board and markers.

PURPOSE: To have people recognize the extent to which they make automatic, unconscious choices that impact their lives. At Productive Learning and Leisure, we specialize in helping people make better choices so they can design easier and more enjoyable lives for themselves. To be able to make better choices, we have to become aware of the habits we have formed which may be taking us away from our desired results. It is a function of the brain to develop habits. In this presentation we use experiential exercises to personalize how this occurs in each of us. Becoming aware of these habits and finding more effective alternatives is an important step to gaining more conscious choice in our lives.

CONTENT: We do a series of quick exercises that demonstrate to people how they have turned everyday, repeated actions into habits that they execute without conscious thought. They experience how difficult it is to make even the slightest change in the way they go about executing these tasks.

Next they explore actual habits they have formed in response to certain situations and how the habits are now "reactions" that may be interfering with their ability to accomplish certain goals.

Finally, they look at "emotional" habits they've formed. Using visual stimuli we have prepared, they discover for themselves how they make choices based on an unconscious, habitual emotional reaction as opposed to choosing from having accurately assessed what might be going on. Based on this, they look for personal instances where habits or reactions are taking the place of making effective choices in their lives. Once identified, they can make new choices that will lead them to the results they desire.
