February Joint Meeting With OCCS
MICROSOFT.NET
What Does This Mean for Developers and Users?"
We have all read or heard of a new MICROSOFT.NET focus for the future, but what is this, and how will it help us? Mr. David T. Jones will address this Microsoft.net concept which is purported to extend our ideas of both the Internet and the operating system, by making the Internet itself as the basis of a new operating system. Such a concept may transcend device boundaries to fully harness the connectivity of the Internet. Mr. Jones is a fifteen year veteran of lient/Server Computer industry and is responsible for promoting these concepts to Southern California Corporations for Microsoft. This meeting will be held jointly with the OC Computer Society on Monday, February 26, 2001, at the Wyndham Hotel in Costa Mesa. Please note the differences in date, time, format and location relative to our more traditional Saturday programs at CSUF.
CHAIRMAN'S NOTES
This
is the first in a series of columns planned for the monthly newsletter.
Now that the new year has arrived, two new opportunities present
themselves to the OCCN. First, we are striving to add more programs
of enhanced technical, business and news content. Some of these
programs will be presented jointly with other local technical groups.
Second, we are more seriously examining new ways to strengthen the OCCN
and other IEEE consultants' networks in Southern California by conducting
joint activities with the LA Area Consultants Network in the immediate
future. As far as the new meeting structure is concerned, an initial event
is scheduled for February 26. On this Monday night the OCCN and the IEEE
Orange County Computer Society (OCCS) are jointly sponsoring a
presentation by Mr. David Jones of the Microsoft Corporation (see
above). We expect that this joint meeting format will attract a
larger and more diverse audience than our normal meetings on Saturday at
CSUF. We plan for additional joint meetings like this one with other
groups and eagerly solicit suggestions and assistance in arrangements for
such events from OCCN membership and others. Please contact me
or any other OCCN Board member to provide inputs and participate is this
process.
As far as joint activities with the LAACN are concerned, a need for new
LAACN officers has spurred our efforts for collaboration. In
addition to a search for volunteers to serve as LAACN officers, several
other areas for cooperative efforts by LAACN and OCCN are under serious
consideration. Among them are joint meetings, marketing efforts, referral
sharing, combined publications, joint mailing lists, further coordination
and linking of web sites, etc. This situation provides both networks
with unusual opportunities for new and more robust activities. The
success of such activities needs the support from a large fraction of the
membership of both organizations. In order to capitalize on this
opportunity, a joint meeting of the LAACN and OCCN has been planned for
the January meeting. The majority of this meeting will be devoted to
defining and implementing cooperative efforts between OCCN and LAACN of
the type mentioned above. This meeting will be open to
all members of the LAACN and OCCN, and, all members are encouraged to
participate. Your inputs for making this collaboration successful
are sought, both before and during the meeting. Please contact me or
other members of the OCCN Board with questions and inputs.
