Unfortunately, aside from writing, my true skill-set and network has not been significantly expanded by IEEE.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>  </span>My verbal survey of a few dozen other people has suggested this is a general feeling, and I meet many former IEEE members who have not found sufficient reason to renew. <o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-top:0in;margin-right:39.25pt;margin-bottom: 0in;margin-left:35.5pt;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-align:justify'><span style='mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"'><span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>  </span><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-top:0in;margin-right:39.25pt;margin-bottom: 0in;margin-left:35.5pt;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-align:justify'><span style='mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"'>I believe that less than 10% section attendance is a sign that our technical meetings are not meeting true member needs.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>  </span>The technical meetings are often fascinating, but they do not substantially reach member goals enough to vie for member time.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>  </span>Thus 30 of our 300 members come to presentations, and 20 of them are students looking for free pizza (written in jest).<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>  </span>I tried to illustrate my perception of the conflict of goals below, proposing that the current application of IEEE resources does not match the goals of most members.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>  </span>Perhaps this is because most of us are not personally on the forefront of research -- most members are in development, publish very little, and spend free time with family or community endeavors.<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-top:0in;margin-right:39.25pt;margin-bottom: 0in;margin-left:35.5pt;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-align:justify'><span style='mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></span></p> <p class=MsoNormal align=center style='margin-top:0in;margin-right:39.25pt; we have some section money (several thousand dollars); we have many of the brightest people in our community (expertise). <o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-top:0in;margin-right:39.25pt;margin-bottom: 0in;margin-left:35.5pt;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-align:justify'><span style='mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></span></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-top:0in;margin-right:39.25pt;margin-bottom: 0in;margin-left:35.5pt;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-align:justify'><span style='mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"'>I plan to employ IEEE resources to help local members develop technology at their current level.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>  </span>The IEEE reputation might be able to reserve space -- at a university, a community center, a local business -- where members can <span class=GramE>come</span> work on the projects and ideas they are interested in.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>  </span>IEEE funds can help purchase development kits and parts.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>  </span>IEEE experts among us can give hands-on training and mentoring as the projects progress.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>  </span>And in a way, IEEE could give us each a little &quot;more time&quot;: most of us feel we don't have enough time, even though we know we should &quot;continue our education&quot;.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>  </span>But if we each pool a little time on a project, we may create greater things than we ever could do alone.<span style='mso-spacerun:yes'>  </span>So in this way, our IEEE section can give us &quot;more time&quot;
