Technology and Methods for High Quality Digital Video Processing

In this talk, Dr. Caviedes will present an overview of video processing technology for high quality digital video applications. In the first part, the overall objectives and components of the video processing chain will be discussed. In the second part, he will discuss methods to achieve high visual quality with video processing chain. The topics presented include video algorithms, visual quality metrics, overall quality assessment, and methods to introduce automated quality control into the video processing chain.

About the Speaker

Dr. Caviedes is Principal Engineer in the Digital Home Group of Intel Corporation in Chandler, Arizona. He is a multi-disciplinary scientist, expert in video/image processing and system design, no-reference quality metrics for enhanced/degraded video and their applications. He also serves as adjunct professor in the EE department of Arizona State University; co-founder and general co-chair of the annual Video Processing and Quality Metrics Workshop since 2005, and co-editor of the February 2004 Image Communications special issue on Video Quality Metrics. Prior to Joining Intel in 2003, Dr. Caviedes was a Principal Member Research Staff at Philips Research where he worked on theoretical and applied research in areas including no-reference video quality metrics, compressed SD/HD video post-processing and enhancement (including resolution enhancement), groupware including multi-point video conference system and screen management, multimedia systems for collaborative learning and teaching, and knowledge based/decision-support systems for medical image optimization and field service (for MR and CT imaging). During his tenure at Philips Research between 1987 and 2002 he worked in the labs in Briarcliff, NY, USA (1987-1998, 2001); Paris, France (1999-2000); and Eindhoven, the Netherlands (2002). In 1998, Dr. Caviedes was a Fulbright scholar at the University of the Andes where he taught graduate level Medical Informatics. Dr. Caviedes serves regularly as technical reviewer for IEEE Transactions on Image Processing and Signal Processing Letters and conferences such as ICME and ICCE. He has published over 35 technical papers, and holds 14 US patents (plus 23 pending). Dr. Caviedes was elevated to Sr. Member of the IEEE in 2008.
