Carl Hayden High School Award Winning Robotics Team

We are pleased to have as this month’s presenter Fredi Lajvardi, a faculty member at Carl Hayden High School. He will present the details of the award winning robotics team that he assembled and which won national championship robotics contests.

Fredi Lajvardi kindles your innate sense of ingenuity with his remarkable firsthand account of how he transformed a group of high school students into a national champion robotics team.

Fredi captivated the country when he led his team of disadvantaged teenagers in a university-level underwater robotics competition, where they defeated leading schools, including top-ranked MIT. Their story inspired the acclaimed documentary Underwater Dreams and was also adapted into the major motion picture, Spare Parts, starring actor and comedian, George Lopez as Fredi. His award-winning Falcon Robotics team is also featured in the 2017 film Dream Big.

Honored with numerous awards for his spirited passion for teaching, Fredi continues to serve as a prominent advocate about the importance of STEM education nationwide. With humor and compassion, Fredi brings audiences on his inspiring journey, illustrating the need to embrace diversity and invest in people to help others realize their potential. About the Speakers

For more than two decades, high school science teacher, Fredi Lajvardi has engaged, motivated and challenged students by making science fun and introducing them to the field of robotics.

In 2004, Lajvardi and his team of underserved high school students drew attention from local and national media outlets when they defeated leading universities—including MIT—in a national underwater robotics competition. Their inspiring story led to the acclaimed documentary, Underwater Dreams, which was selected by President Obama to screen at the White House in honor of National Robotics Week in March 2015 and was adapted into the major motion picture, Spare Parts, starring actor and comedian, George Lopez as Lajvardi. His Falcon Robotics team will also be featured in the film Dream Big, scheduled for 2017 release.
