Benton PUD’s Deployment of AMI and its Perspective on Smart Grid

Presenter: Rick Dunn, Benton PUD Director of Engineering

 

Abstract: Rick Dunn will be presenting Benton PUD’s perspective on smart grid and provide an overview of their deployment of an advanced meter infrastructure (AMI) system.  Rick is the Director of Engineering and oversees their Broadband business.  Benton PUD serves over 48,000 electric customers in Benton County and has installed AMI meters on nearly 46,000 of these accounts with a goal to complete 100% by the end of 2012.  The key points of Rick’s presentation are: 

 

   There is No Smart Grid without Smart Meters and Smart Distribution Utilities

   Smart Grid is Driving Electric and Communications System Convergence

   AMI Deployment Starts BPUD Down a Manageable Path to a Smart Grid Future

   Deploying Technology Now Develops Systems, Processes and Skills to Support Customer Energy Management Options as Markets Develop

 


 
Grand Coulee Dam Tour, August 13, 2011

The IEEE Richland PES Chapter is organizing a tour of the Grand Coulee Dam. This tour is an exclusive tour not open to the general public. Lots of walking and stair climbing are required, so good mobility is required. Transportation will be provided, lunch will be on your own in Coulee City after the tour. Seats are limited, so please reserve early.
Please note that packages, boxes, backpacks, purses, and bags may not be taken on the tour due to current security measures. Cameras are allowed. Due to the nature of this tour, participants must be 16 or over and have a valid picture ID.

Cost: $15 for IEEE Members/$30 for Non-Members

IEEE Richland Section Women in Engineering Affinity Group
The Richland IEEE Section now has a Women in Engineering Affinity Group!  On May 31, 2011, the IEEE Member and Geographic Activities board approved the petition to start a Women in Engineering (WIE) affinity group.  The Women in Engineering affinity group is committed to facilitating the recruitment and retention of women in technical disciplines.  Officers of the newly formed WIE affinity group are: Maria Vlachopoulou as the group chair, Cristina Tugurlan as the vice-chair for outreach and external communication, Ebony Mayhorn as the vice-chair for administration and programs, and Frank Tuffner as the secretary.
