The IEEE Richland Section is pleased to announce that it has recently renamed its scholarship for Washington State University, Tri-Cities students to the IEEE Jim Thomas Memorial scholarship in recognition Jim Thomas’ (1946-2010) professional leadership and passionate support of education IEEE Jim Thomas Memorial ScholarshipJim Thomas (1945-2010)Jim Thomas was a beloved and visionary scientific leader in the Richland Section. With the full support of Jim Thomas’ wife and family the Richland Section renamed its Washington State University, Tri-Cities scholarship to memorialize Jim Thomas’ vision and leadership. Jim earned the rank of Laboratory Fellow at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory for his significant contributions to the field of computer graphics and later visual analytics. He was the founding director of the Department of Homeland Security’s National Visualization and Analytics Center (NVAC). This scholarship awards $1000 to an outstanding IEEE student member based on academic achievement and demonstrated interest in IEEE fields of interest. The renaming of this scholarship memorializes Jim Thomas’ world-renown career. The scholarship’s purpose is to encourage students to pursue academic excellence and subsequent careers in an IEEE field of interest and to contribute to the development of technological expertise and industry in the United States.Additional details about the scholarship may be found on the Scholarships and Awards page.
